| How much RAM for SE/30 |
Posted by: Syjeklye on 2023-11-21 15:41:53 Recently picked up an SE/30 and am going to do a bunch of upgrades. How much RAM should I get? I know it can use up to 128MB, but is that even practical?
Thanks! |
Posted by: zigzagjoe on 2023-11-21 16:02:16 IMO, 16 - 32MB is the sweet spot. 128MB is 100% unneeded. (disclaimer: I have 128MB of RAM in a SE/30) |
Posted by: Syjeklye on 2023-11-21 16:07:17 Is there any benefit to populating all of the slots? Or just the first 4 should be good enough? |

Is there any benefit to populating all of the slots? Or just the first 4 should be good enough? No benefit, although if you are installing 16MB SIMMs on one bank, the other bank must be populated. |
Posted by: croissantking on 2023-11-21 16:38:06 I run 68MB in my SE/30, and I’m happy with it. |

Posted by: Syjeklye on 2023-11-21 16:47:47 OK, Ordered 64MB, overkill, but it was almost the same price as lower amounts. I do have a Rominator installed already. |
Posted by: croissantking on 2023-11-21 16:49:05 With a Rominator installed, you can install the 16MB SIMMs in either bank, and you can leave the other bank empty. The stock SE/30 ROM is more fussy. |
Posted by: Syjeklye on 2023-11-21 16:50:16 Nice, I'll probably do that then, Don't want any issues with speed mismatch or anything |
Posted by: croissantking on 2023-11-21 16:52:11 What other upgrades do you plan to do? |

What other upgrades do you plan to do? BlueSCSIv2 w/ Wifi (for that sweet Daynaport emulation)
Changing out the fan for a quieter one.
Battery swap to CR2032
Had to order a new ADB keyboard / mouse
Had to get new Programmer buttons (they were missing)
Lots of cleaning, maybe some retrobrite
I'd love to get an accelerator, but they all seem to be out of stock or no longer made, so that will be a long term goal. |

BlueSCSIv2 w/ Wifi (for that sweet Daynaport emulation) As far as I know, the Daynaport emulation is a beta/experimental thing and doesn't work very well (at least, if you go off all the numerous support threads that exist on this forum as at least one reference point of it not working well).
Changing out the fan for a quieter one. Try oiling the bearing in the stock fan first - Apple did use an appropriate fan spec to ensure the flyback transformer and power supply were cooled sufficiently. It does somewhat depend on how many hours you're going to use the machine for, but just putting a low cfm fan in there may not be the best idea. |
Posted by: finkmac on 2023-11-22 05:21:15 i think 1mb is good |

I've actually been quite impressed with the Daynaport emulation on my tiny scsi/Zulu derivative. It's not the fastest (60 KB/s max) and range is shorter than typical wireless devices, but within those constraints it's been working reliably as I play with it. Any network access is more than none, for sure.
That said, you must use an external scsi emulator to take advantage of it. No way will any internal SCSI emulator be able to deal with the metal chassis and anti emissions paint. |

i think 1mb is good 1MB isn’t enough even for system 6 my friend. 😛 |
Posted by: Mk.558 on 2023-11-22 13:15:29 Oh 1MB is enough for System 6 but you won't be doing much with it. Here's a 512Ke running System 6:

I have to try that now |
Posted by: billbucks060 on 2023-11-23 00:14:44 Hi
I'm getting a Mac SE30 with a BlueSCSI v2 to replace the HD and I'd like to push the RAM to 32MB.
What SIMM reference should I be looking online to purchase online ? |
Posted by: croissantking on 2023-11-23 04:48:36 From Apple support:
| RAM Slots: | 8, 30-pin SIMM | | Min - Max RAM: | 1 MB - 32 MB | | Min RAM Speed: | 120 | | RAM Sizes: | 256 K, 1, 4 MB | | Install in Groups of: | 4 |
To get 32MB you’ll need 8x 4MB modules. It may be easier to go to 64MB with 4x 16MB modules. |
