Excellent buy! They can be a fun machine to work on. I love mine. Anything to look out for!? I will open up and recap. He said it did work, but not now. Hope cap’s didn’t do any major damage |
Posted by: LaPorta on 2023-10-13 20:46:36 A good 12 years ago the same happened to mine, just stopped working. It was just caps, thankfully. If you need a comprehensive list, I can send you my cap list. |
Posted by: 3lectr1cPPC on 2023-10-13 20:52:06 I'll pray to the HYBRID gods for your sake! Good luck getting it up and running again 🙂 |

I'll pray to the HYBRID gods for your sake! Good luck getting it up and running again 🙂 Thanks! Hope it can be saved. $175 isnt bad if it can be restored🙂 |

Posted by: LaPorta on 2023-10-14 17:14:13 No 175 is a great buy if I’m good shape. Which reminds me, I have to open the one I snagged… |
Posted by: 68kPlus on 2023-10-14 17:15:49 Good luck getting it working! |

Posted by: LaPorta on 2023-10-14 17:27:59 The above list does not include the axials behind the LCD (non-Backlit). For completeness' sake, I replaced these as well:
C11 - 220 µf, 10V Radial
C23 - 10 µf, 16V Radial |
Posted by: 3lectr1cPPC on 2023-10-14 17:28:41 Thanks for the values, I needed to add those. Are these only present in the backlit version? |
Posted by: LaPorta on 2023-10-14 17:30:42 Non-backlit for sure....don't know about the Backlit as I've not had one. |

Non-backlit for sure....don't know about the Backlit as I've not had one. Awesome, thanks so much! |
Posted by: alexGS on 2023-10-19 06:01:25 Congratulations - I guess you’ll be making a new battery to turn it on with 🙂
I’m sure this is probably written elsewhere but…all three non-backlits that I’ve worked on have needed the Hybrid module replaced. Symptoms are: only powers on when the interrupt and reset buttons are fiddled with, hard drive doesn’t spin up or machine resets when use of the floppy drive is attempted, and won’t charge the (new) battery.
I suggest the reproduction hybrid module from user ‘supersvga’ on eBay (and in this group too I think) 🙂 I fitted one and everything worked straightaway - wished I’d replaced it first, hence this post 😊 I was really impressed by the quality of the item. |
Posted by: moldy on 2023-10-19 08:04:25 I would recommend replacing the hybrid as well, even as a preventive measure. Bad hybrid might send >6V to the AD converter of the Power Manager chip, which fries it (and the only source is another Portable or PB100). Based on my M5120 with two units, I suspect hybrid modules are actually the major cause of dead PMGR ICs.
When fixing my M5120, I've tried to wash the hybrid with IPA multiple times to get rid of the cap goo, but it never worked properly and did some funky thinks with voltage rails. In retrospect it was an unnecessary risk given the reproductions are available. |

Posted by: 3lectr1cPPC on 2023-10-19 08:13:07 Did your unit have any cap leakage, or was the board in pretty good shape when you got it? To my understanding, the Hybrid's on-ceramic resistors get corroded easily by the caps next to them and cease to output the correct resistance, causing the module to fail. If I'm correct here, just about any hybrid that hasn't been exposed to cap juice should still be fine, in theory.
Of course now, the number of systems that fit this criteria is few. |
Posted by: LaPorta on 2023-10-19 09:24:02 Oddly it wasn’t as great as you’d think. I was lucky it didn’t get burnt out by the PB1xx power adapter is used before it was common knowledge that that was very, very bad. It eventually stopped working due to cap leakage. When I started replacing the caps, I ran into issues with screen issues and sound glitches. Even today there is the most faint background hiss at the highest volume, due I think to some microscopic residual cap goo inside the board. Techknight helped me work through the worst of it. Here are the threads from back when:
Hey everyone, After completing my Mac II, now I am turning my efforts to my Mac Portable. Over the years it slowly stopped working (bad caps, no doubt), and I am setting out to get it going again. First, I am looking to make a stealth battery...namely, a new lead acid cell in the original's...

Hi everyone, Attached is the video of what I have been describing. Rolling lines upwards when the contrast is adjusted. I recall this happening over 17 years ago when I first got the machine, so it’s not due to anything I have replaced recently. I’m not sure why this occurs, and it is worse...
