Run X windows in A/UX?
Posted by: emendelson on 2023-08-17 10:16:26
In another thread, I've posted a link to a self-contained macOS setup that uses QEMU to run A/UX. It works well, I think, except that I can't X11 apps to run. For example, if I launch MacX, all the windows turn black, and it's impossible to start anything at all. Is there any way to configure the Monitors control panel or anything else to make it possible to use MacX?

Probably I'm missing something obvious...

After experimenting, I see that setting the monitor to 16 Grays makes it possible to start MacX without making everything turn black, but I still can't figure out how to run the "Sample" app or Xeyes or anything else. This is certainly pure stupidity on my part, and I'm hoping that someone will have mercy and let me know what I'm missing.

Hmmm, I haven't had any issues on real hardware, but I've not tried to use MacX under qemu. I know there are incompatibilites between qemu and the real hardware in the graphics department - my VNC server doesn't work properly, for example, with a totally black screen - and I'm wondering whether you're running into a similar issue inside MacX (though this is speculation since I don't know how MacX works)

The answer to my own question is to disable autologin, then, when the login window appears, use the top-line Options menu to change the session type to X11 and login. I still haven't found a way to run an X11 app in an A/UX Finder session, and probably there isn't one.

MacX is a standard classic MacOS 7.x application that happens to be bundled with A/UX. It is not a "hybrid" application and suffers from the same memory and resource allocation issues any classic Mac application has. It was available retail for purchase, and there were later versions released. I don't know if they are in the "wild" though.
