Network Boot Floppy

Hi all,

I've had lots of fun getting a little AppleTalk over Ethernet LAN going with my iMac, 6300 and 7500.

I want to nuke and install a fresh OS on the 7500, but the CD drive is shot. I was going to pull the CD from the 6300, but Interior plastics are so brittle I already snapped the pull at the front with little pressure, so that's now a no-go, I fear doing too much damage with anything on this box.

Is there a 1.44MB floppy image I could use to boot and partion out the 7500 and then go over the LAN to hit the iMac's AppleShare to do the OS install over the network?

And since @Phipli puts bad ideas in my head, is this the right G3 proc upgrade? 😉 Figured should probably do before the fresh OS install if I can pull it off.

That isn't a G3 upgrade, that's just a bottom end processor from a Beige G3.

None of the computers you named have a ZIF socket it would fit. Which machine are you wanting to upgrade?

I liked your suggestion to upgrade the 7500/100, however my memory was off. You suggested a 604e 233, not a G3. So I think this is what I actually need then?

So I think this is what I actually need then?

Right sort of thing, but that one is special because it is from a clone.

There is a cheaper 200MHz one available, but it is labelled as 9600 only, which is a surprise as I understood the 200MHz boards to be universal. I'm caught out by that, especially as I have an almost identical board that isn't labelled as 9600 only.

System 7.5 had something called the Network Access Disk, but I don't know what hardware it supports.

Cheesey you rock! Supposed to have Ethernet and AppleShare support. It's part of the Apple Legacy Software Recovery CD too! More to follow on my little experiment here.

Yeah that 233mhz Umax card is probably as good a deal as you’re gonna get in terms of price/performance. The third party g3/g4 cards are usually 5-10 times more expensive.

Hope it's useful! I use it often on 68k machines, but I'm not sure what its PPC support is like.

As a note, AppleShare + DiskCopy + the Installer is sometimes a bit of a creaky stack; I've had better lack sometimes formatting/partitioning the drive, copying the OS install diskcopy image over to the HD and installing it from the HD, rather than trying to install it over the network. Don't know if you'll need to do this but if it's temperamental off the network, try that.

That's a good plan! Unfortunately the Network Access version on the Legacy Recovery CD didn't work on my 7500, maybe not PPC's at all?

Downloaded the next issue of Software Recovery CDs, more to follow when I get a chance to resume playing around
