| Networking an SE/30 (7.1) to an SE (6.0.8) |
Posted by: smrieck511 on 2023-06-28 17:50:47 I apologize if this has been covered somewhere but I'm having a heck of a time finding good newbie advice for getting them to talk to each other.
Is this something that can be done with localtalk/Appletalk with a simple serial connection (just the two computers) or does it require phonenet adapters or something?
I assume there's some very specific software that needs to be added to system 6.
Lost... Thanks for any help. |
Posted by: LaPorta on 2023-06-28 18:28:25 You can do this unidirectionally with this setup. The SE/30 can be made to share its hard drive via the Sharing Setup control panel. System 6 cannot share without extra software to make it into a dedicated server...but it can connect to the SE/30 with nothing extra other than the built-in AppleTalk software. So, the SE should be able to "see" the SE/30 in the chooser if set up properly...but not the other way around.
You can use a printer cable for this if it is just between two machines; PhoneNet is not required.
Do you need help setting up the SE/30 to file share as well? |
Posted by: Forrest on 2023-06-28 22:45:14 The old website threemacs.com was a good source of info on file sharing - it’s archived at http://www.atpm.com/network/files/file_sharing.htm |

If you have NICs in your two compact macs, then they can either be connected with a crossover cable or via a 10base T hub.
The 10baseT hub/crossover cable is also a great way to get software on/off your compact mac.
I have mine connected to a mac Mini G4 running Mac OS 9. It can access the Macintosh Garden |

You can use a normal printer cable. The only time you need phonenet or localtalk boxes is if you're connecting more than two computers.

As @LaPorta says, set up file sharing in System 7 per the manual (use Sharing Setup control panel), then just use AppleShare (which is on the system discs) with System 6 to access the hard disc on the system 7 machine. |
