SE RAM with battery bomb damage
Posted by: Chuckdubuque on 2023-05-26 14:53:08
Newbie question here. Got a pretty badly battery bombed Mac SE and trying to salvage what I can. One of the RAM SIMMs was hit with battery juice to the point that the gold pin is now green (no gold). I assume this chip will probably be toast? Any danger trying to use it in a known good machine to verify its deadness?

Probably best if you post a picture of the board showing the damage.

More generally, 1MB SIMMs are fairly readily available so it can be easily replaced at pretty low cost.

Front pins all look fine

... time to get scraping! Should be OK assuming this was the only area of corrosion.

So, scrape to see if there is any metal underneath? I am very new at this, so pretend you are talking to a complete idiot 🙂

Yes, scrape it off with the end of a flat head screwdriver, don’t go too hard. Same screwdriver end wrapped with a small piece of fine sandpaper might also help. Also check the RAM slot itself for any corrosion. Long term I’d replace the stick.

Don‘t scrap the rest! Someone might still be able to build a replica board using some of the components (BBU, SWIM, etc).

That vertical trace on the left looks a little suspect. If you have a multimeter I'd check it for continuity.
Probably clean/tin the two pads on the left as well.
