Macintosh IIfx
Posted by: pizzigri on 2023-04-27 13:29:22
So I have started restoring my Macintosh IIfx.
it is a nice machine, sure there are sone in better conditions out there, mine is in what I’d presently would describe as B+. Well, maybe even A-.
in any case, waiting for the gears to replace both ruined ones in the floppy eject modules. The machine has 8mb of ram, a Supermac board that seems to work, a very nice and even collectible IBM 0662 1gb drive - these were considered ultra hi end at the time, and also Enterprise storage - that works great although noisy(I had this drive forever and it makes the same noise as new).
maybe I can get a nice network card too.
the case is not really yellow, it aged well, it is extremely uniform in color - never been retrobrighted. The shields inside are what I think pull rating a bit down.
i will recap the very few electrolithics as this was one of thise boards that came with all tantalums.
PSU works great, I did not recap it as it seems to be strong and very steady. Cleaned everything. I remember removing both batteries 20 plus years ago to use them in my everyday Mac, which was I think an 8600 or beige G3.... cant remember. But this saved the fx, as the logic board is essentially brand spanking new.
probably once done, I’ll put it for sale, I am having now problems keeping all the machines I have. Wife problems. lol

here are a couple pics, but many more will come.

so it is a conquest for me because I never liked this machine. Too big, everything about it was a huge complication - like the terrifying black terminators - I mean, I had to use the 0662 drive because it was one of those to feature full active termination that therefore worked well with the weird SCSI bus of this thing. Let’s not talk about memory! This machine had 32mb ram, and I found one day that someone swapped the four meg sticks for 1mb each, while I had it at my workplace. This was back in the IT magazine. I had it so bad that when I got to take it home I just left it at my
mom house for 20 years. And here it is again.

Quite the re-conquest, though. It's a great machine.

terrifying black terminators
rest assured, that was all old wives tales... straight from apple even. the black terminator is not necessary.

Well, I will try to finish the machine next week. The fx is very fast, however it’s really too, too big. If it was not for screen rot I’d be collecting notebooks....
I found a set of feet that completes the machine too!

I'm looking forward to the first custom machines when the community get good at modifying the reverse engineered boards. I want a IIi - a 25mhz machine with a 25MHz CPU, with 6 slots and a PDS slot 😆

It sounds like you're after a IIcfx? 🙂 a 40MHz, 3 slot machine.

I'd like a 4 slot machine with II-style PDS slot and a 40 MHz BUS inside a Q700 style case. That would be just right for me.

The IIfx is big but they work well as slim towers… especially with the Kensington stands.
