| 6100 ATX PSU possible? | |

I intend to recap the PSU but for a longer term solution, is it possible to use an ATX power supply? Is there any conversion kit or anything? | |

| Posted by: Unknown_K on 2023-05-22 19:25:04 You best bet is to use an external supply like the kinds used in mini or micro PC's and then make a custom board in the empty PS case to make any special voltages you need and connect that to the old wiring harness. The 6100 supplies are not long enough for a server type removable ATX supply. | |

Nevertheless I don’t mind externalizing a PSU, I just need to figure out how to adapt it to function in the 6100. | |

| Posted by: alectrona6400 on 2026-06-04 18:07:31 apologies for reviving a dead thread but the power supply in my power macintosh 6100 is nonfunctional. i am looking to adapt it from an ATX standard power supply i'm fairly certain its possible but you'd wanna use a smaller power supply like flex ATX, TFX, or pico... below is the pinout for the logic board connector on the centris 610 and pm6100. sourced from here the easy part is that these computers don't seem to use soft power... i think, so no extra circuitry is required?  | |

| Posted by: alectrona6400 on 2026-06-05 15:16:52 so it indeed does work but you're gonna have to find another place to put the power switch. i tried rigging it up to an empty area on the PSU but sometimes it gets stuck. i used a dell optiplex 390 desktop (not minitower) TFX power supply for this, removed the ATX cables, installed the 6100 cables, put it in the 6100 case... except i couldn't get a fan to fit, but it shouldn't be a huge deal considering the maximum the 6100 can do is like, 86 watts? could be wrong. but yes it does work though i'm gonna have to relocate the power switch somewhere else... | |
| Posted by: killvore on 2026-06-05 22:31:18 I am pretty sure the MeanWell RPT-160B will work - it exceeds the specs and fits neatly inside the original chassis. Plus that PSU doesn't use soft power so there is no need for sophisticated controls. I can't 100% confirm it works yet though because my project is still WIP! I have functioning Q610-style PSU and there is a pile of other rotting machines that need saving 😆 Here is a shot of the current state - I have repurposed the original PCB to use as a mount, and have kept the switch and the fuse so the functionality should stay the same. | |
