I came across this browser that is the fastest text and picture browser I have used. Links2. It blows any standard browser out of the water with the exception that it doesn't run javascript (it won't hang on clicking on a link though). Requires X11 which is on the install cd (doesn't require Xcode unless you want to compile on your own). Macintosh Garden has a link for a somewhat recent (?) release that doesn't require compiling. Links2 also has the source for a newer version on their website. A little more work might be required for that.
