Dimensions of threaded inserts?
Posted by: j2theLj on 2023-04-04 09:25:42
Hi, I broke off a screw in one of the threaded inserts of the screen hinge of my PowerBook 160. I need to buy some new threaded brass inserts but I’m unsure of the correct dimensions, my instruments aren’t precise enough to correctly measure it. Does anyone know for sure?

Oh nuts. I remember hearing the measurement somewhere but I forget where that was. May have been in a This Does Not Compute video, I’ll have a look.
I did the same thing to my PowerBook 150 but I’m really screwed there as it was after gluing down the 3D printed hinge fix part I installed. I’m going to need a new back case.

Thanks, it would be great to know. I see they sell different dimensions on AliExpress but there are many different kinds with only slight variations. I guess I should be getting some quality calipers if no one knows... Maybe you can melt out the insert with the broken screw and rework it with epoxy somehow?

Nope can’t do that. The part is glued to the PowerBook already

Can you just extract another screw, toddle along to a suitable hardware store to find a nut to fit it, read the specs, and then do the ordering?

Yeah I couldn’t find the dimensions in either of the places I thought they may be. I saw them somewhere though…

I recently purchased some M2.5 x 5mm screws on Amazon for mounting BlueSCSI devices to a 3D mount. I tried the screw on the PowerBook screen back case. It fit.

Here's the Amazon link for the screws I purchased.
