| Centris 610 is a Candidate for "Dirtiest 68k Mac" |
Posted by: olePigeon on 2023-04-01 20:06:32 Oof. I think these might be a bit worse than the IIci and LC given the sheer number of cap cans on this thing. I'm recapping a Centris 610 board, and boy howdy are those some leaky caps. I was using tweezers to hold down the base as I snipped the caps off, and they just disintegrated. Practically fell off.
It's like these caps had a frat party and vomited all over the board.
On the plus side, I guess it's a board revision with a populated ROM slot & SIMM. So it's a great candidate for a patched ROM and RAM upgrade. |
Posted by: 3lectr1cPPC on 2023-04-01 20:11:24 According to my website's cap reference for the Quadra 610 (should be the same), these have 9 47uf 16v caps, which is less than the LC1 and the IIci. Am I missing any values?
Edit: Other online sources say I'm not. Any chance you took a photo of the board before you removed the old caps? I could really use it for reference on my site. |
Posted by: olePigeon on 2023-04-01 20:43:58 @3lectr1cPPC I did not, sorry. But I can take photos post cap because they'll be super easy to see with my new Würth Red Caps™. |
Posted by: 3lectr1cPPC on 2023-04-01 20:49:10 Oh yeah! Wurth caps are the only correct choice if you want to be cool 😉 |
Posted by: mg.man on 2023-04-02 03:18:17 Pic please...
Hi all, I thought I'd start a new thread on this... @Mods, feel free to move this to The Lounge or elsewhere if you prefer... To start things off - here are a couple pics of the logic board from a PM8100/80 I acquired for parts (PSU dead). Not sure I'm going to try to resuscitate this...

Isn't there a single 10uF? Nope, its a SMD tant that the previous owner inexplicably replaced with a through hole electrolytic. Sigh. |
Posted by: imactheknife on 2023-04-02 14:08:41 I had a centris 610 I bought online for $6 bucks that would not come back to life, no chime, no signs of activity. Harvested most components.. too bad really.. most boards of that vintage have loose caps that just fall off, makes life easier lol |
Posted by: olePigeon on 2023-04-02 19:46:53 @3lectr1cPPC Came out pretty nice in my opinion. I really like the red caps. These are the polymer caps, so no leaking. They look more stock with the cans than tantalums. There are 10 47uf 16v capacitors on this particular revision board. I don't know how many different revisions there are. I'm assuming some have the soldered ROM instead of the SIMM?
Also, anyone know if Centris 610 uses the regular II-style ROM SIMM? If so, can someone send me the patched ROM for the RAM upgrade? I'm thinking of maxing this out before selling it.

Posted by: 3lectr1cPPC on 2023-04-02 20:07:04 Ah, I’ll make a note of the revision differences on my site. Would hate to have someone order their caps and find they had one too few… I did exactly that with my PowerBook 100 because I had copied the cap values in wrong. Thanks for the photo! |

Mine has 10x 47uF caps as well, and is a later board without a ROM socket. Did the site count miss one? |
Posted by: 3lectr1cPPC on 2023-04-03 04:01:47 Console5 says 9 as well. |

Console5 says 9 as well. Heh. But every Google image search result I can see shows x10. Some of them are tricky to spot in a photo 😆 |
Posted by: 3lectr1cPPC on 2023-04-03 04:21:45 Hmm. |
Posted by: 3lectr1cPPC on 2023-04-03 04:23:46 just checked recapamac and they said 9, but then I saw their image missed one!
Cops a lot of hate, but is still a nice little Mac. Ever tried to switch it on with the case off? Many...

Hmm. There is one hidden under the hard disk cables, I wonder do people miss that one? |
Posted by: olePigeon on 2023-04-03 08:11:52 Visually, my eyes keep glossing over either the one to the right of the ROM socket or the one below the CPU socket. It's kinda weird. Almost every time, even though I know I'm looking for 10 caps. |
Posted by: olePigeon on 2023-04-03 08:21:04 Oooo, found bbraun's ROM hack to support 128MB SIMMs. Now to install a Pirate ROM and upgrade this puppy to 256MBs. Coupled with the CentrisDoubler @ 40Mhz, this is gonna be one screaming fast Centris. 😀 |

Visually, my eyes keep glossing over either the one to the right of the ROM socket or the one below the CPU socket. It's kinda weird. Almost every time, even though I know I'm looking for 10 caps. The one I'd miss is the rightmost one by the RAM slots. That's the one bruce from recapamac missed - i should probably PM him about that...
Here's the completed reference page btw: https://macdat.net/cap_reference/apple/quadra/q610.html |
Posted by: superseth on 2023-04-29 22:13:18 Wait, what is this Pirate Rom and Centris Doubler? I have heard of the Quad Doubler but not a Centris specific one? |
