| Quadra 610 Shutdown from Generic 7.5.3 |
Posted by: Phipli on 2023-02-27 10:49:51 Odd thing. I've just got a dead Quadra 610 booting after various repairs. I won't lie, I had some trouble with it - possibly onboard RAM, and ADB, SCSI and other things I fixed before powering it on. Mostly because of some cap rot and a couple of bent pins on the IOSB.
Something strange I'm seeing. Obviously these don't have soft power, but if I boot from a 7.5.3 or 7.5.5 CD (no System Enabler required from 7.5 onwards), it freezes when I select shutdown or restart.
Note, if I boot from a CD with 7.6.1 or newer, it shuts down and restarts perfectly.
No, I don't have a hard disk "in it", because "it" is a PCB sat on top of some antistatic bubblewrap next to a powersupply. 😆

Now THAT’s how you get around a broken solder pad 😁 |

Two broken solder pads. And I reiterate- this board was trashed by someone else. |

Getting through some of the backlog. IIci, IIcx and a 610 so far. Probably have a go at the 7100 next. Need to review my previous attempt. |
Posted by: LaPorta on 2023-02-27 11:41:55 Could there possibly be something that 7.5.x is trying to run or do that is not working that is causing the freeze? |
Posted by: 3lectr1cPPC on 2023-02-27 11:47:03 I had a similar issue with my 3400c, would start to shut down then freeze under Mac OS 8.5. It turned out to be a patched Apple CD ROM extension at fault. |

Could there possibly be something that 7.5.x is trying to run or do that is not working that is causing the freeze? I thought that perhaps I needed a System Enabler but I don't. I'm still wondering if there are System components missing from the System files on those CDs? Something that only goes in on a 610 install?
I guess the question is "if anyone has a Quadra 610, does it restart correctly if you boot the TechTool 3.0.6 CD in 7.5.5 (hold down 1 while it starts booting (before and through the happy mac stage)). |

Apple CD ROM extension at fault. Interesting, there is a chance my own CDs do have a patched driver burned on them, and the TechTool CD certainly has a custom CD driver. |
Posted by: LaPorta on 2023-02-27 11:54:51 Yeah, my money would be on something like that. Software not working properly. |
Posted by: mg.man on 2023-02-27 12:01:46 I can't put my finger on where I saw it atm... but I've seen reference to System Enabler 040 v1.1 being needed in some scenarios. YMMV |
Posted by: cheesestraws on 2023-02-27 12:03:55 If it shuts down OK under 7.6, agree with folks above that this is probably a software issue.
Also, agree with folks above that you've done a nice job bringing that machine back! |

Should only be for 7.1 with a 610 Found the chart - so it seems. It does look like 7.5.2 is a relative no-go for most Macs... not that I've ever run that. Usually 7.5 / 7.5.3 or 7.5.5. |
Posted by: Phipli on 2023-02-27 15:56:29 Supporting the CD Driver idea, curiously, B1-7.5.3-R2 works fine when booted from a... erm... SCA80 18GB hard disk 😉

Whatever works, I guess...

c I have a pile of 18GB disks formatted as 2GB partitions... you get bored after a while. |
