MacPython 1.5.2 for 68k machines - no numpy?
Posted by: 1200XL M.U.L.E. on 2023-02-14 17:54:38
I just installed MacPython 1.5.2 from the Macintosh Garden. Wow! I didn't think Python was available for the 68k machines.

I saw that numpy is included with the installer but only for PPC machines. Was there ever a 68k version of numpy?

Thanks!

MacPython 1.5.2 was released September, 1999.

numpy was created in 2005. Before numpy there was something called Numeric; that might be the closest equivalent for such an old release of Python. Are you sure the numpy installer you saw wasn't for a newer Python? If not, then maybe I am confused about things.

Supposedly the Easy Install mentions installing NumPy 11.

When I select a Custom Installation then I see NumPy is for PPC machines.

I install all the 68k options and then run compileall.py and it bonks out when it tries to compile Numerical. The libary does not exist in the Lib folder.

I also noticed the Tkinter packages are in subfolders, as if they should be treated separately? Am I missing something?

The word, without the typical capitalization, is kinda fun to say. Numpy.

UK English has a word "numpty". Means a daft person.

That said, it's probably not generally taken as a compliment, yes?

It's a fairly tame insult, usually used when someone you care about has made an avoidable mistake or to describe a harmless / bumbling fool. You'd get away with calling your partner it if they forgot their sandwiches or something.
