| "disk initialization failed because the disk is locked" |
Posted by: ironborn65 on 2023-01-28 09:09:54 hi mates,
My Mac Color Classic is now repetitively reporting
"disk initialization failed because the disk is locked"
Notice that I have removed the floppy drive, but it behaves as if the drive is present with a locked floppy inside and I asked to initialise it.
I have control for a few seconds when I get to the desktop after the boot, then the annoying dialog keeps popping up,
Any clou? Is it a generic failure of the SWIM? 🙁 |
Posted by: ironborn65 on 2023-01-28 09:23:47 there are some messages in BMOW forum
- Help!
I begin to use floppy emu recently.
My Macintosh is color classic.I connect internal FDD connector.
it seem to move well, but on Mac screen, message apear and loop.
“Disk initialization failed because the disk is locked!” I push “OK”,but same message apear and loop.
What can I do?
No other drives connected.I boot from floppy emu.
Hey Steve, The CC (Color Classic) doesn’t work correctly. I’m having the same issue as another guy on here. If you try to boot from Disk-Tools 7.5.3 you get a looping error “Disk initialization failed because the disk is locked!”. If you boot from Disk-Tools 7.1.1 you get a looping dialog asking you to init a disk. If you open “Disk First Aid” you will see some odd virtual disk. If you try to scan that disk, then quit the app the error goes away until you restart.
I’ve never seen this on any of my other computers. Very odd.
The thread ends with the guy replacing the harness ... I dunno, let's me clean and deoxidise the contacts and check the grounds |
Posted by: ironborn65 on 2023-01-28 09:57:28 no way 🙁
booting from the HD or from the blueSCSI does not change the behaviour
in addition it freezes after a few seconds
it I remove both the HD and the external blueSCSI the floppy with the '?' keeps blinking but it does not freeze.
What a frustration ...
The joy of the Color Classic! |
Posted by: Phipli on 2023-01-28 10:12:58 Has one of the microswitches in the drive (left and right hand side of the opening of the drive, under the opening - three?? in total) broken? |
Posted by: Iesca on 2023-01-28 12:38:55 I mean, the drive was removed correct? Makes me wonder if it's an issue with the floppy controller... |

I mean, the drive was removed correct? Makes me wonder if it's an issue with the floppy controller... Ah sorry, wasn't paying proper attention. |
Posted by: ironborn65 on 2023-01-30 10:17:35 Since my problem with the looping-annoying "This disk is unreadable: Do you want to initialize it?" started when I removed the floppy drive, I just tried to re-installed it ... and it works just fine now.
I then replaced the original non working drive with another drive I fixed a while ago.
And it still works.
So the lesson learned is ... I dunno. It works 😉 |
Posted by: imactheknife on 2023-01-30 16:03:35 I had exact same issue on a lc 475 i recapped. Took some caps off and put back on in area of swim chip, solved the issue. |

I had exact same issue on a lc 475 i recapped. Took some caps off and put back on in area of swim chip, solved the issue. It might even be worth removing the SWIM and cleaning the area underneath it, as it's likely that some cap goo leeched there.

Posted by: ironborn65 on 2023-01-30 23:10:18 In my case the MB is pristine, when I replaced the caps there was no sign of leaks or corrosion |
