OK . . . I have a working Color Classic again . . .

Many thanks to all of you who knowingly (and unknowing) helped me with chips, knowledge and encouragement.

I have a working CC again, but by way of a very weird path.
I recently bought a second unit that was described as junk, and for parts only in the hopes of getting enough bits to make my system work again. When it showed up, not only was the LB in better (visual) condition, but it had the main and video expansion, along with a co-pro installed. Recapped the LB on a lark, and the damn thing started! The memory is bad (I know what a sad chime sounds like now!), but that's easy to fix.

Still leaves me with a pile of troubleshooting to do on the original unit . . .

Nice. They are fickle things.

Is there a secret CC owners handshake?

I don't think there's a secret handshake for owners, but I bet most all of them have flipped their CC the bird at one time or another!

They can be frustrating...

Do we need a handshake?
Going forward, I'm going to assume anyone staring at the ground muttering about analog boards and the lack of schematics, is a color classic owner.

The trick to working on a CC is to first figure out what kind of ghost is possessing it, and proceed from there.
