Monthly Reminder about the Classic Mac FirstClass server...
Posted by: MarisaG on 2023-01-04 09:42:06
We have a permanent FirstClass server with over 290gb and over 8,100 files to download for classic Macs. What is FirstClass? It's a GUI BBS for classic Macs from the 80's & 90's. Not a lot of them around anymore but this is the best way to get apps for classic Macs that can not access websites easily. Just download this one app and you get access to all the files in the repo using a GUI... This BBS is curated for classic 6-7.x & 680x0 servers.

Join to get great files and make new friends. To get detailed instructions on how to access the server go to https://macos.retro-os.live/index.php/firstclass/first-class-server-access and follow the steps...

If you want to contribute, the Classic Mac website is at https://macos.retro-os.live where you can give feedback on the service. We also have a discord for Classic Macs at https://discord.gg/VGefxXp2ds.

Not quite as easy as the instructions suggested it ought to be - but I registered and I'm in.... I think!

Last time I used First Class was as an admin back in University for the Sociology department. I recall nothing at all about it!

I've had no success with getting this to work. Tried a variety of settings. I'm using an ethernet network connection and appletalk and just get error no first class server on network 1044

Usually the "no first class server" is due to the network connection on the client itself. Were you able to download the FC client app?

BTW: What issues did you have? I would like to improve my docs...

When the client is first opened, it pops up a 'file open' dialog, with no indicator of what to select. In my case, my 630 is set to use the Documents folder by default, so the open dialog went there, not the First Class folder.

It wasn't hard to figure out what it was looking for when I went rooting around, though the choice of three settings files was a bit unclear. I ended up selecting 'new connection' in the client, and working from there - which obviously succeeded, so it wasn't hard of course.

I created a .iso and virtual drive image for use in Basilisk/SheepShaver that explains it a bit better. I also include a config file called "ClassicMacs" to log you in. Just douible-click it. I'll put up a link to it if you (or anyone else) wants it...
