| SE/30 HDD LED - Red or Yellow? |
Posted by: j2theLj on 2023-01-04 08:40:22 I’m putting together an optional SE/30 between two sub-optimal units and I discovered that one has a yellow HDD LED and the other had a red one (see pic).
Does anyone know which one is the earlier? Any other considerations regarding this?

Posted by: Phipli on 2023-01-04 08:56:30 I've never seen a red LED in an SE/30 before, but earlier SEs had red LEDs.
I can't stand it - it feels like a warning light! I kept it, but made and fitted a replacement orange one for my SE.
My older 20SC has a red activity LED too. |
Posted by: Phipli on 2023-01-04 08:59:17 Btw, the "yellow" one is amber when lit. |
Posted by: cheesestraws on 2023-01-04 10:42:32 The only right answer, of course, is purple. |
Posted by: Cam on 2023-01-04 11:06:26 Purple is good, unless you have a BlueSCSI installed, then you obviously need a blue LED. |
Posted by: KGLlewellyn on 2023-01-04 11:27:07 SE/30s have always had yellow/amber LED's in my experience. Mine has one, although it hasn't been lit in around 23 years as my father swapped out the SCSI drive for a much larger one that didn't have a header for the activity LED.
SE and 20SC's yeah they had red ones.
Personally I like to go for stock appearance, so I'd replace LED's like for like. |

The only right answer, of course, is purple. Well.... what about the stock IIci pink?
|
Posted by: j2theLj on 2023-01-04 13:24:36 I should really have blue then with my BlueSCSI! Maybe in time, but until then I’ll go for amber, red does feel like some kind of warning. |
Posted by: timtiger on 2023-01-04 14:07:38 If you keep the stock housing, stay with amber or orange.
If you put it into a colored MacEffect case, choose the led color accordingly 🙂 |

IIci pink It’s pink, really? 😱 The led in my ci was amber, too… |
Posted by: joshc on 2023-01-04 14:53:07 SE/30s could be red, amber or green from the factory I think. Not sure what the reason was, or which came first. These days, just use whatever colour you prefer. |
Posted by: rollmastr on 2023-01-04 23:41:12 As far as I know the earlier SEs came with red LEDs, while SE FDHDs and SE/30s usually came with amber LEDs. |
Posted by: volvo242gt on 2023-01-05 00:06:05 The aftermarket bracket I pulled from my SE when I did the dual FDHD conversion had a red LED installed. Most of my other SE machines had green LEDs on their OEM hard drive brackets. |
Posted by: ironborn65 on 2023-01-05 01:19:02 in my two SE FDHD the LED is amber
in my SE/30 it's red just like in the pic above |
Posted by: ymk on 2024-01-17 02:17:58 My SE/30 had no LED, but my SE FDHD had amber from the factory.
Amber is nice. Red should be reserved for malfunctions. Blue, for rare conditions, because it's tacky. |
Posted by: pfuentes69 on 2024-01-17 05:16:34 Mine has it green... but I have vague souvenirs of not having it initially and transplanting it from an SE I had time ago. |
Posted by: Phipli on 2024-01-17 05:33:16 Mine now depends on which of the two disks it is accessing 🙂

Mine now depends on which of the two disks it is accessing 🙂 Brilliant ! |
Posted by: Scott Baret on 2024-01-17 05:43:18 From my experience:
The early SE had red, which I usually have seen paired with a MiniScribe.
Sometime around the SE/30 launch, amber began to be used quite frequently.
Green is a rare color in the SE line but I've seen it on an OEM drive (including in the SuperDrive model).
Most SE/30s I've seen have the amber light.
On that note, does anyone have a good source for the LED with the correct plug for the Quantum ProDrive LPS/EPS? Most of the stock SE LEDs are too large to fit them. |

On that note, does anyone have a good source for the LED with the correct plug for the Quantum ProDrive LPS/EPS? Most of the stock SE LEDs are too large to fit them. Which connector is that, do you have a photo? The three I've seen are 2.54mm, 2mm and... A weird JST thing with wings on the connector.
If it is a 2mm, you're after a 2mm Dupont connector. If it is the third, I never worked out exactly what the part was. Found one in a scrap box. |
