DVI problems with DVI-HDMI-cable
Posted by: thanmodor on 2022-12-31 08:59:57
Hello,

I am currently trying to connect a G4 MDD Power Mac (867 Mhz version) to my Benq PD2700U display via a DVI to HDMI cable, but nothing happens - there is no signal received. When connecting to a simple LCD TV via HDMI everything is working fine. I tried various settings - both on Mac as on the display, but there is no change. Do I miss something?

Thank you in advance,
thanmodor

I can't remember the specifics, but DVI to HDMI adapters don't work with all sources. It might just not be possible with a basic adapter.

What GPU is used by the G4 MDD?
Maybe it doesn't like the Benq's 4K size? Maybe something like the Dr HDMI 4K can make the GPU think it's a 1080p display?

Many thanks for your quick responses!
The GPU is the default Nvidia GeForce4 MX with 32MB VRAM - I think it was the least powerful GPU in MDDs. Probably it is not capable of driving 4K, but 1080p should be possible. The Dr HDMI 4K sounds like an interesting option as well - I will do some more research here.

Finally, the G4 MDD is usable as expected. I bought a cheap HDMI EDID Manager and Emulator - some sort of no-name version of the Dr HDMI 4k, as the Dr is currently not available. After installing, 10.4 was able to detect the Benq and use it with Full HD. But Mac OS 9 was not. Thereafter I reactivated an old Lenovo Thinkvision display with native DVI-support and everything is working well. I was very glad to find that old gem in my parents' attic!

I'm currently using a Gefen dual link DVI to DisplayPort adapter connected to a Dell UP2715K 5K display. It does 1600x1200 in Mac OS 9 and 1920x1080 in Mac OS X from a ATI Radeon 7000 in a Power Mac 8600. It can do 2560x1440@60Hz and 3840x2160@30Hz from a Nvidia 7800 GT in a Power Mac G5 to a 4K display.
