OS 7.1 disk image with enabler for LC III
Posted by: Solvalou on 2016-06-03 06:15:34
Hi all long time no see. Had alot of "life" things going on so wasn't able to be so active and had such little time, apologies. Long story short I finally got round to sorting out some of my machines with the help of that awesome BigMessOfWires Mac Emu device I got a few days back. I'm trying to get System 7.1 on my LC III currently but I need the System Enabler 003 (I think?). Trouble is, although I can download the enabler software, I have no means to make a .IMG with it in the image.

I was wondering if anyone here would be clever and kind enough to perhaps upload a disk image with it ready to go? I got all the other 7.1 disks in both physical and digital form. Thanks so in advance!

EDIT: You have to do a couple of things on your LCIII to get this working.

https://68kmla.org/forums/index.php?/topic/24521-lc-iii-system-71-install-disks/

From link above:

I also had problems trying to install 7.1 on my LCIII, even with the Enabler. I had to take some convoluted steps to get it to work. Simply copying Enabler 003 to the 7.1 install disks won't work, since it doesn't know to install the Enabler with the rest of the software. Here's how I got it to work:

1. Copy System Enabler 003 to a System 7.1 Boot Disk System Folder
2. Boot off of the Boot Disk
3. Once in the Finder, copy the Boot Disk System Folder to the internal HD of the LCIII (I formatted the HD before copying)
4. Reboot from the internal HD
5. Run the System Software 7.1 installer disks as normal

That's it! The installer won't delete or overwrite the Enabler, and it will install the full 7.1 Software into the System Folder with the Enabler in it.

Hope this helps  😀

The link I gave you previously didn't work because I copied the System Enabler directly to the 7.1 disk.

I made the custom LCIII boot disk djhaloeight was talking about. It has the 003 system Enabler as well as the patched version of HD SC Setup (it will recognise any SCSI HD), if you want to reformat your drive.

That should do the trick. Tell us if it worked ok for you.

Aha I did actually see that thread. As far as I can tell all I need is a pre-'enabled' 7.1 boot disk to boot from after 'init' the HD and formatting it with 100% dedicated to the Mac itself. Then just copy the contents of the boot disk to the root HD. All of which I can do, but won't I need an enabled 7.1 boot disk along with an 'enabled' Disk Tools to boot into the correct environment to do that?

Yeah you will need one of those disks.

Do you know how to write to a floppy using your modern computer? If not try this (from 3rd paragraph). You can use the image I created earlier.

If you have a floppy EMU, it's even easier! Copy the image to the floppy EMU SD card and plug the EMU cable directly on the LCIII logic board.

Glad my info was of use 🙂

More food for thought here...if you are using the set of install disks but have the retail version, you can stick the enabler on the Install 1 disk. You'll get that particular system listed in your list of computers to choose from. I did that once with an LCIII missing its install disks (and later on a 475) and it worked fine. The LCIII, to my knowledge, doesn't have any extras (i.e. the Screen control panel on the CC) so there should be no concerns doing this. Don't forget to put the enabler on your Disk Tools disk while you're at it, even though Disk Tools doesn't install as part of the regular install.

There are a few goodies on those disks if you poke around enough. Disk Tools contains two mediocre utility programs, there are Apple Classic Fonts on the Fonts disk, and there are some usually non-installed trinkets on the Tidbits and Printing disks. The usefulness of each will vary depending on your system. Unfortunately, none of these contain Font/DA Mover 4.1 or the Namer. Both are available on Apple's site if you have the links (no longer easy to find but still on Apple's site for download if you know the URLs).

The Font/DA Mover isn't required on System 7 and up. Just 6 and down.  You can drag fonts straight into the System Folder and it will ask if you want to place them into the Fonts folder, and thats it. Same with DA's...just drag them where needed.  It will run on System 7, but isn't necessary at all.

As far as sticking the enabler on the Install 1 disk, I tried that.  It will let you boot up, but the install script doesn't know to to actually install the enabler with the rest of the software.  This is why I had to find a workaround by copying the enabler to the boot disk, then copying the boot disk to a freshly formatted HD, then installing the system software onto the HD.

While the Font/DA Mover isn't a necessity, it is a nice luxury to have if you're working with multiple system versions. All of the System 6 disks come with version 3.8, which doesn't run under System 7.
