Exact physical dimensions of Nubus cards
Posted by: egrath on 2022-12-04 11:31:18
Hi,
is there anywhere a specification on the physical dimensions of NuBus cards available? I want to create a 3D printed Nubus card which can hold a SCSI2SD (or ZuluSCSI) with the SD card available from the slot cover. As a last resort i could simply measure the Apple NuBus video card in my Mac II, but a "official" specification would be preferred.
Best regards,
Egon

This is from the "Cards and Drivers" book attached.

Wow, thank you very, very much, exactly what i was looking for!

Some machines (Quadra 610 etc etc) only take a 7" card.

No problem 🙂 I knew where it would be.

I want to create a 3D printed Nubus card
The most complex bit is probably the backplate, and there's already an example available:

Well, that make things even easier, i'll just have to design the plate for mounting the SCSI2SD and the appropriate dummy connector to fit on the NuBus socket 🙂 Will keep the community informed about how's the project going

It might be easier to just buy some connectors and order some PCBs with holes in the right place. The connectors can be about $4, PCBs... the main cost is postage, but they look nice and you can screen print something on them. Then 3D print the rear cover.

I have these on the way that are very similar :

If you don't need connection to the slot (for e.g. power) then you might want to rely on the backplate for mechanical support rather than the slot, as those connectors can be more expensive than expected. NuBusFPGA uses a Molex 085003-0567, which Mouser France lists at 8.35€ (qty 1).
@Phipli: if you have a known-to-work reference that is cheaper and generally available, please share, I had a hard time finding a better solution (e.g. 3M's DIN-096CPC-RR1-HM is even more expensive on Mouser, Harting's 09033966921 is cheaper but is one of many variants and I'm not 100% sure which one is a drop-in replacement for the Molex part...).

£3 each delivered if you buy 5. They're unbranded. Please don't buy them all, I'd like to buy some in the near future but want to confirm my design is right and they're a good fit first.

Don't worry about that, I won't buy them directly - my soldering skills (and eyes) being what they are, I need a MPN and a link to a 'reputable' (all relative) buyer for the likes of SeeedStudio or JLCPCB to do the assembly for me...
Interestingly, this ebay link claims the parts are drop-in replacement for the Harting's MPN I mentioned. So if those work for you, then the Harting reference should be OK as well (Mouser lists those at 4.7€).

This looks very cool, I assume this is for use with an accelerator? It this one modeled after Sonnet or NewerTech?

Its a clone of the Sonnet relocator - I'm expecting the prototypes to arrive tomorrow 🙂

Spent a painful amount of money obtaining an original to measure up.

Gotcha did you replicate the extension bits as well for use in an 8100 vs 7100 etc?

... you should have asked, I'd have happily lent you mine :-|

Same, I also just procured a newer tech bracket as well, which is not the same and not compatible with the sonnet brackets as the newer tech cards angle back a bit vs the sonnet cable which is just straight over. I don't have a newer tech card though so if anyone wants it for prototyping send me a message maybe we can work something out.

I do have a Newer upgrade and would be interested in making a dual purpose card, but I'm on the wrong continent.

They fit (for the application I have to remove the third row of pins). I believe I did the dimensions off the Harting drawing??

There is a slight gap between the board edge and the seat on the connector. Could be them or me. Could be fixed in a revision or by bending the pins.
