Hinge repair for the Apple Studio Display

The hinge of the Apple Studio (LCD) Displays are known to break and mine where no exception 🙁, so I decided to recreate the broken part and 3D-print it in stainless steel. Even the threads where printed although you have to freshen them up with a tap before use. I also had to file down the sides a little bit, but otherwise it was a snugg fit.

The broken original part. It's made from a cast Zink alloy (cheap) but over time it tends to bend and eventually break. Another issue is the contact point where the springs rest that gets eaten up by the hard steel springs over time.

First I had to measure the whole thing, create a 3D-model in Fusion and make a test print in plastic for dimensional check. It checked out find so I ordered the parts.

After some adjustments I could refit it into the hinge:

And remount the hinge:

And she stands on her on for the first time in a long while.

WOW, I didn't know one could print in metal! That is great! I will totally keep that in case mine fails. Separately, do you know where to get the rubber feet?

You can print a lot of different metals these days 🙂. It's real Sci-fi actually! For the rubber feets I haven't checked, but those can probably be printed using flexible resin. I'll take a look. For the IIci I'm 3D-printing feets in flexible resin.

Incredible! I've got a studio display with a busted hinge, but unfortunately the actual foot part was missing when I got it so this wouldn't fix it 🙁

I think that’s the same model of display that I have, the back plastic leg was broken when I got it. Not sure if the leg was broken by the prior owner because the metal hinge went bad or not… but considering it was a working ADC display on the free pile, it was still useful to me.

Not sure it’s worth both cracking mine open to access/replace the hinge AND then have to find a new plastic leg as well. The screen still works fine, and it looks good from the front… so I was thinking some sort of easel to hold the whole display at the proper viewing angle. It’s one of those things that I’ll eventually find the time to figure it all out, eventually…

Still, good to know that there’s someone out there who’s figuring out how to make replacement metal hinges. While these displays look great while in use, they are clearly not designed to be stored away, such a pain!

I can send step/stl files to anyone interested. Just DM me, there is one catch, the 17” part only fits the 17” model, the 20” is wider and the 15” is more narrow. Unfortunately I only have the 17” model, otherwise I could have adopted it 🙁.
