Passive cooling solution for the Macintosh Display Card 8*24 GC
Posted by: jasa1063 on 2022-11-10 16:53:56
I recently picked up a Macintosh Display Card 8*24 GC NuBus video card. The one thing I immediately noticed is how hot the Am29000 CPU got. I was looking for an inexpensive passive cooling solution and this is what I came up with. I found this 4 pack of aluminum coolers for $10.99 on Amazon. I attached one of the coolers to the Am29000 using Sekisui #5760 double sided thermal tape. This has made a noticeable difference in how hot the Am29000 now gets. Attached is a photo of how this looks on the Macintosh Display Card 8*24 GC and a link to the coolers on Amazon.

I just found out how well this removes heat from the Am29000. It was transferring all that heat to my Daystar PowerCache 50MHz Accelerator causing that to overheat. I had the Macintosh Display Card 8*24 GC in the NuBus slot closest to the IIci PDS slot. I moved it over to the middle NuBus slot and that seems to have solved the issue. Everything is running stable at this point.

A nice slow 80 - 90mm fan stuffed somewhere (velcro on base can do) in a jam packed vintage Mac case is always recommended - just to blow that small amount of air through and past the heatsinks, with the PSU doing the exhaust work.

By moving the card to the middle NuBus slot and rotating the heatsink 90 degrees, the overheating problem is now gone.
