| Asante Nubus Card |
Posted by: aplmak on 2022-11-09 07:22:42 I was wondering if anyone could help me out on this? I rarely have ever worked on Nubus slot Ethernet cards in the past and more recently. I have a Performa 600 which I put in a brand new Asante Nubus Ethernet card. It has 3 types of connectors.. one is an RJ45 ethernet jack. I am getting connectivity but I don't think I have the proper drivers installed.. I've tried two different Asante installers and one with the most recent drivers that Asante released. I am running 7.6.1... Any thoughts on what I should try?? It says ASANTE-MC3NB on the card. |
Posted by: LaPorta on 2022-11-09 08:12:03 What is it that makes you think it is not working if you are getting connectivity? What else is going on? Are you able to connect to any network services? |
Posted by: aplmak on 2022-11-09 09:06:47 Well I get a green flickering connectivity light on the card. When I switch to AppleTalk I get flickering orange light for a little bit after it has made connection. At the switch I get no light indicators what so ever. I've tried Ethertalk Phase 2 and have swapped it around with different versions.. one doesn't work and one does.. I've tried different Asante installers.. even the last one they put out. Now I also have a Turbo 601 in it boosting it to a PPC... I am not sure if that makes any difference.. but I have installed the drivers with the PPC enabled and the installer appears to have recognized the right installation.
So I have tried to connect via a PBG3 over Ethernet with AppleTalk running and file sharing... the Performa doesn't appear on the G3 and I tried vice versa.. It's been so long since I have done this and I haven't messed around with AppleTalk in quite some time. I did set it to DHCP in the TCP/IP control panel on the Performa 600 to see if it grabs an address and it doesn't...
I have done regular modem port AppleTalk connectors to the G3 before from some other older machines such as a PB100 and whatnot with no issue.. I think this is all boiling down to the proper control panels and extensions for the Asante card and the Performa running 7.6.1 |
Posted by: Corgi on 2022-11-09 12:04:07 Not sure if I'm understanding, but you'd need a crossover cable to connect two computers directly together. Auto MDI-X, the feature of the Ethernet to allow you to use a standard cable for this, was defined in 802.3ab and not ratified until then (1000baseT / Gigabit Ethernet). There are a few 10/100 cards that will do it, but the PBG3 is not one of them afaik. |
Posted by: LaPorta on 2022-11-09 13:25:29 It sounds like he had a switch. Does this particular card play nice with auto-switching routers also, I would ask? |
Posted by: aplmak on 2022-11-09 14:51:38 Yes I am connected to a small switch off of my router, with some other IP connected things. I do understand a cross over cable for one computer to another. On one connection I’m actually running a serial to ip adapter successfully. It is a 10/100 4 port switch.. I think it has to do with the Asante extensions and OS compatibility. I may just install 7.1 or 7.5 on an external drive. Then run the Asante installer driver and see how it plays with an older OS. If I remember correctly back in the day the whole change to Open Transport kind of convoluted things. I do think it’s an OS and Asante driver issue. I just thought maybe someone might have dealt with this before. I haven’t used Nubus cards in a very long time… |
Posted by: aplmak on 2022-11-09 15:37:30 LaPorta! It was the switch!!! I swapped it out for a 4 port link sys hub and whala!!! It works!!! Damn switch!!! Grrrrr….. |
Posted by: LaPorta on 2022-11-09 17:23:53 Trust me, I found that out the hard way with my SE MacCon. Won't work with anything even a tiny bit modern. Trial and error... |
Posted by: uyjulian on 2022-11-09 21:43:17 Auto speed negotiation doesn't work with the MC3NB card. You need to set the speed manually on the other side of the connection to 10mbps. |
Posted by: EIMS on 2023-02-11 08:55:21 There is a thread on fixing this problem over at TinkerDifferent https://tinkerdifferent.com/threads/asante-mc3nb-rev-g-nubus-nic-getting-10base-t-working.2040/. The automatic link detection on the MC3NB isn't compatible with ethernet switches that do Auto MDI-X. Changing R28 on the MC3NB from 36K to 220K seems to solve the problem. |
Posted by: mikes-macs on 2023-02-11 09:02:25 You may just need to go to the Network or AppleTalk control panel and switch from LocalTalk to Ethernet. |
Posted by: dr.zeissler on 2025-08-05 04:32:18 I have the same problem. I want to connect my IIcx equipped with 10/100 NUBUS card to my NAS CS406 with supports the old apple-file-protocol. It's working fine with stock 7.5.5 on my 6100/66 with the internal network adapter.
I have no luck either with MacTCP 2.06 or OpenTransport 1.1.1 with TCP-IP. Every time I change the settings from "Printerport" to "Ethertalk3" I get an error.
What do you suggest is the problem here? Thx! |
Posted by: robin-fo on 2025-08-05 04:59:38 My 100Mbit NuBus card needs a special driver. Did you install one? |
Posted by: dr.zeissler on 2025-08-05 05:10:56 I installed package 5.1.2 perhaps that's the wrong one? |
Posted by: robin-fo on 2025-08-05 05:24:35 Which exact card do you have? |

Which exact card do you have?
I installed that one before I done the video above.
The NUBUS Card should be this one:

Posted by: robin-fo on 2025-08-05 06:57:01 I could build a similar setup at home since I have a Mac II and this NuBus card.. Do you have some type of SD card to SCSI device (BlueSCSI etc..) so I could send you the disk image in case I can get it working?

I installed that one before I done the video above. This sounds ok.. |
Posted by: dr.zeissler on 2025-08-05 07:08:56 Yes I use blueSCSI. Would be nice if you can try this out.... I am currently at the end of my options.
I also tried System6 but OT is only for System7 and MacTCP has the exact the same issue as OT when I try to set to ethertalk3.
I think it's a bug with Apple-Talk. |
