Strange Mac SE 1/40
Posted by: zefrenchtoon on 2022-10-18 08:26:45
Hi everyone!

I need your thoughts about this ...

It seems to be a Macintosh SE 1/40 by looking at the front marking.
On the back, it is simply marked Macintosh SE (and not 1/40 as I saw on others SE 1/40)
On the back, we can see that there is a PDS card in it with a DB15 connector but ... for which use ? AUI ? Display ? I think there is no display card for SE which uses a DB15 and AUI usually has some sort of hooks on each side of the connector ...

Please, tell me if it's a good find or not and if I should buy it or not πŸ˜…

This is not AUI … I would bet on video card

I thought about a SE upgraded in SE/30 with video card too …

If it is a SE with video card, which one ?? I did not find any ref about a SE PDS Video card using a DB15 connector 😡

I don't have much to add here, just chiming in to say that PDS cards for SE or SE/30 are usually rare enough that (depending on price) it's probably worth buying just for that.

SE 1/20 and 1/40 are European SE FDHD models. The number stands for the RAM and HDD. I have an 1/40 that came with 1MB RAM and a 40MB HDD. These machines were shipped with the rear "Macintosh SE" label.

The DisplayServer cards came with both a DB15 and a DB9, and I belive there were some accelerator cards offering an optional display out port. Anyhow, now that you’ve got us all intrigued you simply have to buy it and let us know πŸ˜…

What are they asking for it?

The backplate for those had both connectors on them, so still doesn’t check out 100%. At least we know some had some version of a DB15 on them..

Show him some of all the leboncoin ads selling SE’s for €50-100 πŸ˜‰. Good luck and let us know what you find!

Looks like some sort of display card, either stand alone or as part of some accelerator board. The DB-15 port with the screw posts pretty much make it some sort of a display connector. The only real way to see is to take off the back cover/case, and actually look at the card, I guess.

Hum ...

The guy does not want to sell under 120. I don't know what to do. I don't really "need" this poor SE but I'm curious to know 😡

My line of thinking would be:
  • Could you use the SE for parts? Does it work? (Do you have another SE or similar that could need spare chips some day?)
  • How much is the card with to you? If SEs are going for 50-100 € and this seller is asking 120 €, is the card worth 20-70 € to you?

Go to check it out and bring your screwdriver, request that you want to check out potential battery/caps damage before you commit. Sneakingly trying to identify the card when you open it up πŸ™‚.

Or to check if there's a card at all... the countless SE/30s I bought that just had an expansion bracket installed but no actual video card πŸ˜€

Before paying 120 for a Mac SE be sure to verify that it is not battery bombed (most of these came with the infamous Maxell batteries) and be aware that the HDD might be on it's way out and the floppy drive will need a clean + lube.

So … I bought this Mac … but for 50€ because it did not start up.

Clearly, the floppy needs new gears.
HDD is sound starting but actually, unable to know if it still works or not.
CRT is over too …

Once at home, I tryied my bits and fortunately, I have a good one to crack it open !! (Thanks to my Bosch screw driver bits …)

And … it is battery bombed πŸ™

I don't have enought time to disassemble it more but I took some pictures of the "strange card" we can see at its back.
Brand: Memory Plus
Model: Modam SE Adaptor (check the picture, I did not make a typo in "MODAM"…)

So … is it a typo ? is it a modem adapter ? πŸ€”

That's a monochrome graphics card. I have an SE/30 colour version which I think is called the CODAM or something similar.
Posted by: zefrenchtoon on 2022-10-22 07:01:33
so MODAM would stand for MOnochrome Display ADapter
and CODAM for COlor Display ADapter ?

Nice ^^

Thanks !

I need to ask my friend to try to repair/recap it now. πŸ˜•

No reference of these cards on this page:

@cheesestraws I remember now that I've read your post on this thread:
https://68kmla.org/bb/index.php?threads/unknown-mac-se-pds-card.42060/#post-456615 !!

My friend will try to save this poor battery bombed SE. I hope that the HDD is still working to backup the MoDAM drivers.
Did you find any reference on this card somewhere ? I tried googling it but did not find anything πŸ™

There is a tiny tickle of a memory that suggests I found a single newsgroup post asserting that the SE version existed, but if I did and that isn't memory playing tricks on me, it didn't say any more than that.
