Powerbook 100 issues
Posted by: imactheknife on 2022-10-07 17:04:30
Recapped a powerbook 100. She turns on, and gives me the black screen. Once in awhile she will give some lines, or an actual screen of some sort. Something smelled hot, so I noticed a little sparking on the the caps on back of display. I took the ones I thought were doing it and re did them, but one still seems to so it. Cap isnt exploding, just some spark. Any ideas?

my uneducated guess is that something is shorted to ground, probably a cap connection (caused by cap juice?)
also check the inductors on the logic board, they're susceptible to corrosion and their purpose is to drive the LCD voltages so if they're bad then the LCD won't work. My guess is that it's more than that due to the sparking though.

I'd replace the sparking cap, and check continuity and further deep cleaning of the site at the same time.

Ok, i am getting litte further. Still sparking on lcd caps. So, not sure?! Logic board works perfect now, chimes and boots from floppy. 1/2 screen comes on but just lines. Is this to do with caps? Or bad cable? Or bad lcd??

Bad connection somewhere, might be a broken trace, definitely has to do with that sparking cap somehow. Check the display ribbons between the LCD board with the caps and the LCD itself, cap juice can eat away at them and permanently kill them. Hope that hasn’t happened to you.

What's the best way of cleaning those LCD display ribbons? Anything more appropriate than iso?

Ok, took off all those caps, redid them, no sparks now. Now just black screen. Brightness button seems to work. It boots off of a floppy fine. I had to use tantalum’s on inverter board. Console 5 doesn’t include those. Would that be a part of the issue?

Ok, so hard drive seems to work, and logic board. Only thing is display. Are the caps on back responsible? Or is it the caps on logic board that would be responsible for grey screen and floppy icon? Thanks for the hel.

Pulled off the inductors, checked traces.. looks good. I cant seem to even get the lines on display anymore, just back lit screen. Will try again tomorrow. Too tired tonight to see if any change after resoldering inductors back on..
