Who can fix my SE/30's logic board as service?
Posted by: retrofreak83 on 2022-09-27 05:20:03
Dear people of 68kmla,

I am writing because of a broken SE/30 logic board.
In 2011, the board has been recapped, not choosing SMD parts sadly, and by removing the original caps, serious leakage has been discovered.
Also, no cleaning has taken place.
(Cfer https://68kmla.org/bb/index.php?threads/se-30-still-simasimac-after-full-recapping.42178/).
However, some ICs also show signs of leakage effects and may need cleaning or even replacement.

To not make things even worse, I would like to give the board in the hands of someone who is experienced in that kind of work. Of course, I am willing to pay for it.

I am located in Germany, so if someone resides in Germany or the EU would be great to have bearable shipping costs.

Where are you from?

Dear all,

thank your for your recent replies. Actually, my board is currently being taken care of.

Recapping is one thing if you know that all the traces work and the chips legs aren't corroded.
Repairing a board is an entirely different thing, it most likely costs hours of concentrated work.

To be honest, i would buy another working board and sell this as not working.

I'm in Germany and have recapped several macs, but there was always the knowledge that the board itself is ok.

Good luck 😎

Offered retrofreak83 to repair the SE/30 board. I am in the Netherlands.
He sent me the SE/30 logic board, the package arrived 7 november.
Checked the board in one of my systems and got horizontal lines, removed the simm's in bank B, still horizontal lines, cleaned the ROM contacts and got it to boot.
Booted with Bluescsi.
Placing the bank B simm's back results in horizontal lines, the simm's are ok, tested in another se/30
Guess there is some address line or other connection to the simm's broken.

Started removing some of the 'artwork'.

Removed all of the modifications and cleaned the board a bit.

Created new pads to replace the missing pads using wires to the next via

Added new tantalium caps

Also cleaned the pins of UE10, not sure if I should remove it from the board and clean underneath
........................
Update
Found the problem with the ram, there is an almost short circuit (80 ohms) between RASA1 and RASA2 on SIMMs 3 and 4
all other signals to the SIMMs seem to be connected OK.
Traced the problem back to RP1, RP1 has an internal short somewhere (pins 10,11,12 < 80 ohms), removed it from the board
Don't have any in stock, so have to order some.

Took 10 days for the part to finally arrive (from the US), is a lot of shipping cost, but this specific/exact part is not available in Europe.

Soldered it on, checked all connections, booted and the board works with 8MB RAM

There still is an intermittent problem with the ROM, will check/resolder the socket tomorrow and test again.

Does anyone offer this service in the continental US? I am interested in sending someone my SE/30 board for repairs, located in WI.

You might want to check with Amiga of Rochester. He currently has some of my boards in for a recap. But not sure how extensive a repair he’d be willing to do, and would probably charge you an hourly rate, but worth sending him an email.

Dear people of 68kmla,
a story of more than 11 years now comes to an end 🙂

I recently received the logic board back that marcelv has taken care of.

First try, I had horizontal stripes. I gently pushed RAM and ROM into sockets, then the board booted.
But there was one issue left regarding the rest of the whole machine:
If you look at the original thread (https://68kmla.org/bb/index.php?threads/se-30-solder-pad-problems-while-capacitor-exchange.23458/) I reported a white vertical line symptom.

I noticed that one pin of P1 connector of the analog board is discolored. So I resoldered the connector. After resoldering it, symptom was gone (apart from some patterns I need take a closer look in the future).

Thanks for your help!
