Hello everyone, I bought an AppleTalk set on eBay, the kind that comes with the 8 pin connector at the end and that 3 pin cable to go between the pair. Anyways, I am having a hell of a time trying to use it, so much so that I created an account on here. Normally I'm able to figure this sort of thing out after some trial and error but I didn't grow up with Mac's and don't even own an Apple product newer than the Mac Plus. What do I need to do to get AppleTalk working so I can play some Maze Wars+ on it. I sort of have an idea in that I need to enter the "chooser", enable the AppleTalk and eventually select the other computer to network with. But, I have no idea what files or disks I need in order to get that to actually happen. I do have a floppy emu that can be used as a hard disk from BMOW. I also have an external SCSI drive that works if that even matters or is useful I have no idea anymore. I have tried downloading Appleshare 2.0.1, and a whole bunch of other "Appleshare" stuff and just cannot get it to install at all. Can someone list all of the files or the process, or even link a video that explains what I need to do. BTW the 2 Macintosh Plus' have 4 MB of ram, and the other has 1 mb. |

Which version of the System are you using?
If it's 6.x.x, this post can answer your question.
Basically, you need the AppleTalk extension. |

In principle to have a system ready to use networking you'd need to place some extensions in the system folder and control panel, as you see in the blog post. You could eventually have this in a floppy and boot from it, but it wouldn't be too practical.
As you have the floppy Emu it's easier for you, as it can emulate the hard disk. |

Is it possible to download a hard drive image with the software already on there and just use it on the floppy emu? I don't have a Floppy Emu (yet) so I can't answer.
I use BlueSCSI and there you can find HD images of 6.0.8 that are preinstalled with AppleTalk, but I think you can easily duplicate the image you already have in the Emu and add the required extensions. |

Also, why do I constantly get errors like this? Everytime I download any appleshare software it seems I'm getting something to this effect every time about not being able to do this or that.... |

It looks like you double clicked it. Its an extension not an application. An extension is sort of a patch that extends or modifies the System software.
Instead of double clicking it, restart (to reload the system and the new extension) then go to the chooser in the Apple menu (top left of the screen). You should find AppleShare in there now. |

I can't test now, but if the Network Installer Disk has an "Install" utility, it would prepare the HD for you. Alternatively you can do it manually by copying the AppleTalk extension and Network control panel to the System Folder of your HD
About the error you said, I can't tell exactly. Just think that in the system folder there are extension that aren't meant to be opened manually, as are part of the System that run automatically. |

I wasn't able to download the network installer disk off of the link or the macintosh website you provided. What happens is that it is a sit or bin file, and I do have stuffit downloaded and that usually opens disks, but in this case it wont. Is there a website or link that just has everything as a Disk image I can drag and drop? |

You do need appleshare on both computers, but you don't need two hard disks, it will fit on a floppy disk.
How have you plugged the computers in to each other? Do you have a mac serial cable? 8pin mini din at both ends? If you do, you can just plug it in to the printer port on both computers instead of the more complex cables and boxes. If you're only using two computers and have that cable (round with 8 pins at both ends), I'd just use that. |

There is a bit of confusion going on in this thread, between AppleTalk and AppleShare. They are different things.
- AppleTalk is like TCP/IP, it's the protocol stack that allows computers to talk to each other
- AppleShare is a tool that uses AppleTalk to share files and folders.
- If all you want is multiplayer games, you don't need to set up AppleShare at all or even worry about it.
- You should just be able to string your LocalTalk kit between the two Macs' printer ports, then go to the Apple menu, go to Chooser and turn on AppleTalk on both machines.
- Then the two computers should appear in Maze Wars to each other (though I don't know anything about that game so I don't know how the UI works)
