I just picked this up, came with an Apple Mouse, no keyboard, no power cable. I hadn't ever had a Macintosh Classic before. (I had a 128k Macintosh that worked well (Floppy drive was fussy))
I've been a Apple Certified Tech since 2003 (sooo close to 20 years) and I'm always recapping and repairing old electronics, so I'm confident I can repair this
I got it expecting the internals to be in bad shape, but wasn't as bad as I assumed. Here are photos of when I got it, opened it up and checked out the rust, sand blasted the rust away, cleaned and re-lubed the floppy drive, free'ed up the SCSI drive (which wasn't spinning when I got it) removed the CAPs and power connector on the logic board, and recapped the board. It's now booting (well, it was before the recap) and I no longer get the checker board screen. But I still have to recap the analog board (1 cap I can see is swollen). I'm also building a BlueSCSI board to replace the SCSI drive as well.
Before the recap of logic board, maybe 20 or so power off and on's would get the machine to show either a floppy icon or smily mac icon, other than that it was no display or checker. Since the recap every power on it gets either a floppy icon, smily mac icon, or a floppy with a X icon. I do hear the drive spin up since the recap, but I can hear the speed dip for a moment and rev back up. So my best guess now is a power demand issue with the analog board. I'll recap (once they arrive) and try again
I think I got lucky on this one, the battery was bouncing around freely in the case, which I think is why most of the damage is on the bottom of the housing and none was on the boards (minus the battery holder, had a little bit on one of the tabs, which has since fallen off, need a new holder). I'm still having issues with the floppy drive. Not sure if this is due to analog board not being repaired yet (and now giving enough power?) or the drive or disks I'm using with OmniFlop
I have a 2nd Macintosh Classic coming in from eBay and guessing inside is in bad shape. Will make the best machine out of the two. Keeping the best one for me, and either fixing and selling the 2nd or using it for another project (depending on the condition)
Things left to do:
RetroBrite shell
Recap Analog Board
Replace Drive with BlueSCSI
Install OS from Floppy Drive (Hopefully using OmniFlop and some blank 1.44MB Floppies I have hanging around)
Install Uninvited

Turns out the floppy drive issues I was having was bad writes from my floppy drive in my PC tower using OmniFlop. Swapped drives and disks read great in the Macintosh Classic now! Still got work to do, but took some time to enjoy a classic | | 1 |
