Upgraded Quicksilver won’t boot
Posted by: Nepnep on 2022-08-01 13:22:42
Hello all, I finally was able to upgrade my Quicksilver with a Dual processor card. However, it doesn’t seem to work. It powers on and chimes, but it either shows a black screen, goes into open firmware and trying to boot from there gives a “Default Catch! Code=300” error, and if it tries to load into OSX, it’ll just sit on the loading screen indefinitely. I even did an SMC reset and it didn’t help.

It didn’t need the firmware patch, it’s already on firmware 4.3.3 I believe, and the processors aren’t even 7447/7448s. The only issue is that I knocked a capacitor off of the board, but it was quickly replaced by the same exact cap from a donor board.

Did breaking that cap somehow screw up the logic board even if it was replaced with an exact match, or is it something else? I know the card works (the seller said as much) and the machine worked as well for over a year before upgrading it.

Which dual processor card are you using?

I bought it off of Bonanza, it’s a custom-made one using I think a dual 1GHz card as a base, with the two CPUs replaced with 1.33ghz 7455s.

Also after reseating it, it will boot into the OS 9 installation CD I’ve been using as a test as long as it’s a cold boot. If the CPUs are hot, it’ll either crash or show a black screen. And OSX will kernel panic no matter what
