| Centris 650 |
Posted by: imactheknife on 2022-07-25 13:39:41 So i bought a centris 650 for a project. I asked the seller if he could pull heat sink off and snap a picture off 68040 as i wanted to make sure it was the full 68040. Anyways, got item today. It powered on, no chime, no video. The seller didn’t snap heat sink back on so was loose in computer for the whole trip from his place via canada post. I snapped the heat sink on with new thermal paste, but of course no change. Right near one of the heat sink clips i notice some damage on pcb. Just wondering if he damaged a trace pulling it off? |

Posted by: jessenator on 2022-07-25 14:25:51 I can definitely see them potentially damaging a trace. If you're not incredibly careful, especially with a metal tool (screwdriver...) you can slip quite easily. If it happened pre-shipment, they were probably trying to get each arm of the heatsink clip off, instead of prying from the center. You're likely to bend the aluminum fins of the heatsink, but that's a small price to pay.
Re: a backwards CPU insert: unless you just literally hammered on it, you would have a hard time putting it in backwards--you'd break a pin off before it would seat properly.
OP, I would look at the board more closely with some good light and see if you can't zoom in a bit with your camera for a clearer shot 🙂 might help make for an easier diagnosis.
Have you checked other things in the machine? speaker connection (I've had them go bad, so might could test with some headphones in the audio out). Remove any installed VRAM and DRAM DIMMs and see if that helps. |
Posted by: Byrd on 2022-07-25 14:27:24 Looks more like screwdriver marks to me by someone unclipping the heat sink. |
Posted by: joshc on 2022-07-25 14:29:51 I think there's a damaged trace there, patch that and see if it helps. If any traces to the CPU are damaged you're probably going to run into issues. |
Posted by: imactheknife on 2022-07-25 14:45:23 I think one trace is bad.. checked with tester and there isn’t continuity there, sucks. I am worried that the broken trace is possibly shorting the via right beside it.,i circled the two. Top one has continuity. One right below doesnt. |
Posted by: joshc on 2022-07-25 16:51:27 If it wasn't like that in the auction photos, might want to ask the seller about a refund. If there was no photo of that area, you've got less come back possibly. It does look possibly repairable though. |
Posted by: imactheknife on 2022-07-25 17:35:11 Ok i fixed that trace. She boots, chimes, But then screen went all garbly after a few minutes at desktop. Now, i get part bong, no video. Guess that trace might be shorting? |
Posted by: joshc on 2022-07-25 23:24:05 Yeah, it's worth buzzing out the traces around where you've put your patch wire.
Seeing as it's just video that is not working now, have you tried contact cleaner on the DB15 socket? Or try a NuBus video card to see if you get video from that. |
Posted by: imactheknife on 2022-07-26 17:13:41 Well, it booted fine, ran for a bit than locked up. Turned off, than on, got chime and boot. Shut off, then turned on and nothing. So hard to say. Makes me annoyed lol.. at least i got refunded 1/2 and keep it for parts if that’s what it comes too |
Posted by: volvo242gt on 2022-07-26 18:10:05 Worst case scenario, part it out. Another option is to just find a good working Quadra 650 or 800 board and swap that in. If you go with the 800 board, add the power LED to the right front corner of the board, that way it'll identify itself as a Quadra 650 board. |
Posted by: Trash80toHP_Mini on 2022-07-26 20:19:43 It's unfortunate that you had the seller check the CPU, no Centris shipped with a full 040. Did it turn out to be the standard LC040 or had it been upgraded with a full 040 at some point? Good luck making some use of it |

Good luck making some use of it It has the 68040 and Ethernet which basically makes it a exact board of my quadra 800 wombat. Thats why i wanted it |
Posted by: Trash80toHP_Mini on 2022-07-26 20:40:40 Very curious that. 😉 When I finally have a chance to get at it, I'll have to check mine. Fabulous case design, not your run-o-the-mill Apple nonsense at all. |

Good luck making some use of it That's quite incorrect. It's true about the 610. But, not the 650. Every Centris 650 with 8MB of RAM and ethernet came with a full '040. Both of the machines I've upgraded to Quadra 650 specs had 25MHz 68040 chips installed. One of those is the machine I currently have. Needs the resistor mod done to complete the upgrade. I've had a Quadra 650 board that came with a 33MHz 80LC040, however.
*edit* the Centris 660av also came with a full '040, since it was just an early Quadra 660av. |
Posted by: Trash80toHP_Mini on 2022-07-27 07:53:33 Thanks for that correction! Now I really need to check out my C650. Never played much with it, was sent to me in trade. |
