| Video card update - odd behavior (unusable system) |
Posted by: egrath on 2022-07-07 09:08:48 Hi,
i just swapped my GeForce 2MX in a DA for a (original Apple) Radeon 9000. The system boots into 9.2.2, but after it has been loaded, i'm unable to do anything with either the mouse or keyboard. The mouse can move, but no clicks are recognized. The keyboard does not work entirely.
However, in Open Firmware Mode, the keyboard is usable. As a test, i swapped the cards again and everything works as intended.
Any hints on how to get back to a working system with a Radeon 9000?
Thanks,

Posted by: LaPorta on 2022-07-07 10:26:00 Where’s the keyboard and mouse plugged into? What mode is this (I assume a G4)? Is it a monitor connected via ADC and the keyboard mouse plugged into it? |
Posted by: egrath on 2022-07-07 10:55:31 1. It's a G4 Digital Audio
2. Keyboard is plugged into the USB Port on the mainboard (the one closer to the PCB, don't know if it's USB port 1 or 2)
3. Mouse is plugged into the right USB port on the Keyboard
4. Monitor is connected via DVI |
Posted by: egrath on 2022-07-07 12:36:03 I solved the issue 🙂
Solution
1. Boot the device without any system extensions by holding shift during startup
2. Install the latest ATI drivers for OS 9.2.2, obtained from https://gona.mactar.hu/ATI_Mac/#CS
The last step was done by formatting a USB stick with HFS on my day-to-day Mac and putting the extracted file right onto it. |
Posted by: LaPorta on 2022-07-07 14:01:15 Does the card have an ADC connector? I just wonder if that could have caused an issue. |
Posted by: egrath on 2022-07-08 02:48:36 Yes, the old and the new one both have ADC in addition to either VGA (GeForce 2MX) or DVI (Radeon 9000); But i don't use ADC as i don't own a proper display for it. |
Posted by: LaPorta on 2022-07-08 05:34:50 Understood, I just have seen issues before where for some reason with older ATI drivers, it seems like the USB functions of the ADC connector interfere with the onboard USB functions somehow. |
Posted by: egrath on 2022-07-08 06:28:46 Thanks for the info, there are chances that this caused my issue too - the drivers i originally used where the ones that came with 9.2.2. |
