Sound Manager patch for Mobius and Carrera 040 accelerators?
Posted by: ktkm on 2022-07-07 03:38:26
I have been researching the crackling sound issues with my Mobius card before but never reached any conclusion on how to fix it.
This old Google thread mentions something about a patched version of “Sound Manager”. Is true or just a myth?

At https://www.micromac.com/software/software.html there's a download called "Carrera040 v1.8 (latest software with sound fix)".
Might be worth checking out.

Thanks! The 1.8 is the one I’m using, except I use the one @Bolle supplied me with that works with SE/30. However, It doesn't seem to fix the Mobius sound issues.

Thanks! Missed this one since I most of the time use System 7.1. I’m going to try the patch with system 7.5.3.
“This problem was previously corrected by replacing the Sound Manager extension and Sound control panel of System 7.1.”
The quote is from the same link you just gave me. It would be nice if I could replace the Sound Manager instead of just chuck it out in System 7.1.

And? Did it work? The patch from MacGui?
Posted by: Bolle on 2023-08-24 01:57:21
1.8 does fix the sound issues, except when running the card in an SE/30 with an older variant of the patched control panel.
Some time ago we discovered that the sound patch that's included with the 1.8 control panel is running another machine ID check that wasn't patched and didn't know what to do on the SE/30.
There's a version available now for the SE/30 that will fix the sound issues:

The patch from MacGUI is only useful if you want to use the older versions (<1.7.1) of the Carrera driver for some reason.

Tried the fixed drivers and control panel and the sound is initially not good. Only after starting the control panel and setting the system back to SLOW (030) and then setting it back to FAST (040) the sound stays normal. System 7.5.5.

Have you tried System 7.5.3? If I remember correctly, that is the last supported system.

Ah, not yet. Thanks!

Interesting. I actually only tried 7.1 because that’s what I usually run on my compact Macs and it works as expected there without any extra deactivation/activation cycle in the control panel.
I’ll have to try 7.5.5 at some point.

If I remember, the readme weirdly named specifically 7.5.3 and nothing else. I might be being daft though.

I noticed on 7.5.5 when I put the disk cache up higher (2048) the sound issue resolved

Is that with the patched driver package or just the vanilla one?
