PLUS Floppy Disk Problems
Posted by: aihk on 2022-06-29 05:55:16
Can I use a 1.44M floppy disk to make a bootable disk for plus use? I've searched a lot of information and couldn't find a suitable method.

What do you have at hand to write the floppy? Another classic Mac?
If so, you can put a sticker to cover the HD hole in the floppy and write on it a 800K boot image.

I have tried it, but the square hole cannot be formatted after the paper is attached. I have PLUS, SE, CLASSIC, LC, LCII. I searched for the information just now, can it only be formatted as one-sided?
I only have a 1.44M floppy disk

Well... this is how I did it... I covered the HD hole and used another Mac to copy the image... I think I used the G3 Wallstreet, but this should just work with others, I guess.
For the Plus is dual-sided, but not high density. Single sided is the 128K or first 512K.

I only have 372K after formatting

After the format you get a "Verification" screen that checks the disks and starts reducing the size of available space?
If so, I'd try another floppy or another computer...

There is no verification screen after formatting. I gave the formatted floppy disk to PLUS and it can be used, but the capacity is only less than 400K.

Did you try different floppies? Always the same resulting size?

Yes, I used three 1.44M floppy disks, all of the same size

And which computer did you use to format it? Do you have the same result if you use the SE and the Classic or LC?
