Portable Hybrid: Looking for 3 US testers
Posted by: SuperSVGA on 2022-06-26 22:55:43
I'm looking for 3 US based people (I'd like to do international, but I don't have the money for it at the moment) who need a replacement hybrid for their M5120 Portable.
I've been sitting on this design since the beginning of the year and I've just now decided to actually do something with it. Recently I put one together and so far it seems to work!

If you're interested, be aware that it will need to be soldered on to the logic board in some way, which will require desoldering the original hybrid.
If you don't feel skilled with desoldering and aren't worried about "destroying" the original hybrid, I would recommend cutting the legs off of the old hybrid and removing the legs with a soldering iron.

I haven't had a lot of time to test things, but so far I've tested the following:
  • Boot and install System 6.0.8 (on an original Conner drive)
  • Battery meter goes down as the battery drains
  • Sleep, power off, restart
  • Booting with a RAM card and modem installed
  • Booting of a FloppyEmu
I have not tested charging yet, since I'm waiting on a part to come in later this week.

My Portable seems to have some strange hissing sound and occasional variances in audio volume, but I'm not sure if that's the fault of the hybrid or the fact that I had a lot of corrosion in the sound area of the logic board, to the point where one of the transistors fell off.

Other things I have yet to test include serial, ADB, and external SCSI, but I have no reason to suspect any issues with those yet.

This is a huge undertaking, and amazing that you have done this. Unfortunately I won't be of much help, since I have a well-working hybrid that I don't want to mess with. However, if this works works well, I will definitely order one as a backup spare!

I've had several MLA'rs send stuff to me recently - they've not used the USPS "Priority Int'l" - which is pretty outrageous - but just sent using standard USPS International service (small 'jiffy' envelope) - it worked out to less than $20 and took under 2 weeks. I'm happy to cover the cost if you're willing to consider. Just drop me a PM.

...and regardless, a BIG thanks for taking this on!!

Yeah, this is good stuff. Nicely done.

I only have priority mail envelopes and boxes at the moment, but I'll put you down for one and figure it out.

That would be awesome! I'm happy to cover the shipping - no need for you to be out of pocket! I'll drop you a PM

I have a 5120 board I’d be happy to use as a test recipient.

Send me a DM with your shipping address, and I'll send one out soon.

If you have one more I got a portable that might need it, it was turning on after a recap and now is not for whatever reason.

I'm out of parts and money at the moment, but let me see if I can get an order in sometime soon. I'll try and send a DM once I can get the parts.

After that last revision, I've made some more changes and order up the next batch of boards. Once they eventually arrive from overseas and they're tested good, I should have a lot more available.

As for the finished design, I think it's nearly there...
