Modern TIFF/EPS/image formats for use in System 6/7?
Posted by: Garrett on 2022-06-08 12:04:10
As a follow up to my last thread about modern TrueType fonts in System 7 (which I actually wrote a blog post about), I have another related issue: How can I get modern TIFF, EPS, or other image formats (PICT?) into a format that most software can recognize in System 6 and System 7.

When I had Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, I found ways to export into a legacy format (TIFF and EPS) Aldus PageMaker 4.0 could read. However, unfortunately, I no longer use Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator here, instead opting for Serif's Affinity Photo and Designer. After exporting the output TIFF and EPS files from Photo/Designer, none of my old software (Aldus PageMaker 4, FreeHand 3, SuperPaint) could recognize them.

Any thoughts on a way to convert these graphics to a format (TIFF, EPS) the old software can recognize? I'm guessing there's a backwards compatibility issue here.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as always.

From Affinity Designer or Photo, for TIFF, are you exporting as 8-bit? Compression either LZW or none?

And, for EPS, are you exporting as Postscript Level 2?

Those are the only things I can think of. If that doesn't work, maybe Graphic Convertor can convert TIFF to an older version? EPS (vector-based) would be more challenging to convert. I still have CS3 as long as the computer it's on lives, so I can convert to older formats when needed. I also have a licensed version of CS2 as a fallback.

If you want to go a real roundabout way on vector-based EPS files and they aren't complex files, use a font creator and import the artwork as glyphs, make a PostScript font out of it, install that font on your System 6/7 computer, open FreeHand, type the appropriate letter for the artwork, convert to curves and save as an EPS.

Have you tried an online converter? SVG to EPS could do the trick. Do you have an example file?

@Garrett Did you try GraphicConverter?

@Garrett Did you try GraphicConverter?
I've tried "Save As" in GraphicConverter 11, but didn't have any luck. Maybe I should try going from JPG to TIFF (as I think I was going from a TIFF to TIFF) or maybe SVG to EPS?

I was trying different graphic formats some time ago to transfer images from new osx to osx 10.4 to system 7.1 - the best results I had using tga files… Maybe that helps.

I‘m curious to hear if you were successful!
