Upgrading a Mobius 030 board
Posted by: Realitystorm on 2022-05-30 11:46:46
I recently acquired a SE FDHD with a Mobius 030 board that I'm trying to upgrade with a full 030 CPU and 16MB of 60ns ram.
I'm having difficulty figuring out how to remove the existing ram from the Mobius board. Instead of the usual SIMM clips the Mobius 30 pin sims seem to be locked in place, and I'm either overthinking it or I need some sort of special tool to get them to come out.

Anyone have experience with upgrading the memory on these boards or a similar type of connector?

Looks like it's the same slot as the NeXT system
, but I didn't know if there was a better approach than this hack.

And I found what I need, a SIMM extraction tool.

Found another version "https://68kmla.org/bb/index.php?threads/id-mac-plus-030-upgrade-card.30662/page-2" AMP SIMM Removal Tool part number 382264-1. No luck finding where to by these though.

I've got one of those with my boxed Novy accelerator. I can take measurements and detailed photos if needed.
Basically it's just a square shaft that fits into the edge of the SIMM socket. Then there's a pin on one corner that fits into the hole on the SIMM and disengages the locking pin. By turning the tool the SIMM then gets ejected from the socket.

Thanks Bolle, I've asked Herb from RetroTechnology if he has one kicking around, I'm getting the parts for the upgrade from him. If the answer is now, then I may need some details from you.

Herb doesn't, so I'm going to do a few more checks before I use the dental pick hack from the video.

I even found the patent for the thing I need, but no supplier.... https://patents.google.com/patent/US5203074A/en

You know you are in trouble when you google “SIMM extraction tool” and one of the top hits is ….. this thread.

I bought one of these from these people in 2019 for $6.18: https://www.btw-electronics.net/

However it seems to no longer be listed on their website. Perhaps you could try contacting them? Part number 382264-1

with a full 030 CPU
Just out of curiosity.. How can a ‘030 not be "full"? Is there something like a 68LC030 without a PMMU or so?

There's the 68EC030 and indeed it comes without a MMU. You won't be able to use virtual memory/Compact Virtual with an EC chip.
So to actually make use of more than 4MB of RAM on the accelerator you want a full 030.
