Help Identifying 68040 CPU Upgrade
Posted by: igor_av on 2016-04-30 17:46:49
Hi. I came into the possession of a 68040 based CPU upgrade similar to a Quaddoubler. Could somebody help me find out for which Quadra/Centris model it was designed? The "missing pin" is in the upper left corner, near the C24 mark.

Thanks.

the 040 on 1 corner is pin less so should fit any 040 with space

I believe this is a Newer Technology product for the Quadra 700 with a 68040 running at 50MHz. "Newer Technology (A division of Spectrum Engineering)" appeared in some early '90s publications. Note the 700-B model number on the label.

The FCCID reveals it's a Newer device indeed:

A little more hunting reveals it's a Newer Technologies Quadra Overdrive (hence the QOD).

https://picasaweb.google.com/kreats/NewerTechMacUpgradeshas a few different kinds. Yours is a DT166C which lines up with that page's pictures 10 and 11, for a Quadra 900.

Whoops. Well the "700" was just too obvious to actually be a useful clue I guess!

I took a closer peek at that bit, looked like it said 7QD-B instead of 700 - it was a google search for 7QD Quadra that lead me to https://mail-index.netbsd.org/port-mac68k/2005/09/26/0001.htmlwhich gave me the name of the thing!

Thank you all! With those informations, I found out that this item is actually for Quadras and Centris 610. I'm a bit surprised : cooling is only made with a heatsink and a fan. I thought that 50mhz versions of this kind of accelerator required peltier junctions or other aggressive cooling methods.

a 40 mhz rated 040 wont get to warm at 50 mhm.  im pushing a 25 out of a centris at 40 mhz on a spare board to test and fails wihen warm with just heat sink, with fan have yet to get a lock up.

I have one very similar to this in my Performa 475. The fan is so big that it blocks the LCPDS card.
