| Centris or Quadra 650 |
Posted by: Nifty950 on 2022-04-26 18:22:47 I am also looking at perhaps a centris or a quadra 650 and i noticed that the centris has the auto insert floppy drive while the quadra has the floppy drive with the lips. which do you think i should go for? I like the Centris drives more, their eject sound is more pleasing but the quadra drives have the advantage of currently being cheap to replace. |
Posted by: beachycove on 2022-04-26 18:38:14 Quadra will have full 68040 and onboard Ethernet (AAUI); Centris probably neither. |
Posted by: jeremywork on 2022-04-26 18:49:43 Quadra also shipped at 33MHz; Centris 25MHz. They can both run at 33, but one is turnkey. |

Turnkey? What does that mean? When you basically get to take it out of the box and use it, versus needing to go swap an oscillator to attain the higher speed (in this case.) |

Centris probably neither The base model Centris 650 lacks Ethernet and has the LC040 (no math coprocessor / Floating Point Unit (FPU)). The higher spec Centris 650 has Ethernet and the FPU. If you see the Ethernet connector on the back, it should have the full 040 with FPU. My Centris 650 is the higher spec with Ethernet and FPU, running at 25 MHz (as @jeremywork noted). |

Quadra will have full 68040 and onboard Ethernet (AAUI); Centris probably neither. As @mdeverhart says, the higher spec Centris 650 has both. And, conversely, the base model Quadra 650 lacks Ethernet and has the LC040. |
Posted by: beachycove on 2022-04-27 03:53:45 From the Developer’s note:
Summary of New Features 1
The Macintosh Quadra 610 and Macintosh Quadra 650 computers are essentially higher-performance versions of the Macintosh Centris 610 and Macintosh Centris 650. The changes in the new machines include
■ faster processors: 25 MHz in the Macintosh Quadra 610 and 33 MHz in the Macintosh Quadra 650
■ FPU in all configurations except the entry-level configuration of the Macintosh Quadra 610
■ enlarged floppy disk slot to allow the user to push a floppy disk all the way in (the drive no longer injects the disk automatically)
■ built-in Ethernet port (optional on Macintosh Quadra 610)
■ modified shield on the CD-ROM drive bay to accommodate alternative 5.25-inch storage devices with controls on the front, such as a 44 MB removable cartridge drive (only on the Macintosh Quadra 650 )
■ new machine identification values returned by the Gestalt Manager |
Posted by: volvo242gt on 2022-04-27 11:25:15 Yes, however, the 33MHz 68LC040 was offered after the developer note was published. I owned a Q650 board that was so equipped. So, not every Q650 was equipped with the full '040. Just like how not every C650 was equipped with the LC040. |
Posted by: beachycove on 2022-04-27 11:33:46 That’s interesting. I had/ still have a Q650 as well, but didn’t know this. I think it’s a great machine for its time. |
Posted by: volvo242gt on 2022-04-27 11:44:00 The board I had did come from Europe, so it's possible that the US/Canadian markets didn't get it, whereas, other markets did. Wound up using it as a donor board for a Q800 board I installed in my previous C650. Swapped over the power LED, to convert the 800 board into a Q650 board. |
