Hi there,

I have a PC Compatibility card (486 DX2-66) installed in my Quadra 800, and I am trying to configure access to the CD-ROM drive on it. The DOS driver is configure correctly, but the CD drive (Letter E: ) is never accessible (IO error). The CD mount on the Mac side correctly.

I think it is something wrongly configured on the Mac side of things, as it probably shouldn't mount on the Mac side when I am in DOS mode, but I'm not sure of that. I know it is the behaviour with the floppy, if I insert a floppy into the drive in DOS mode, the Mac does not sees it and vice versa.

Interesting problem, I haven’t experienced this one. What version of Mac OS is running? You may try the newer PCsetup2x drivers if you haven’t already.
Also, double check that the Apple PC software floppy diskette is installed after installing DOS. This is usually the piece that enables CD access.

Edit: also, is the CD drive an Apple OEM SCSI drive? I’m not sure it’s required, but aftermarket drives might not be located correctly. Perhaps others have insight on this.

I am resurrecting an old PowerMac 6100/66 DOS so I am crawling infos on the better way to use the PC Card.
Yesterday, I have found this FAQ which is full of great info. Maybe it will help you:


For exemple, be careful that the PC Setup v2.xx is made for Windows 95B/98 only ! if you plan to use DOS/Win3.1 (on a Quadra 800 I think so), then you will have to stay on v1.6.4 (the last Apple official setup)

I’m running Mac OS 7.5.5, and I think I have an early version of the DOS utility for Mac, maybe 1.3 or something like that. I have to double check. Maybe a more recent version will help.

I already have installed the CDROM software for Mac. As far as I’m concerned the CD drive is the original that came with the machine.

I have installed Windows 95 on it, and the way I did it is by copying the CD to a folder on the Mac and shared that drive with the PC. Not perfect but it was a good workaround so far.

I’m using a BlueSCSI, not sure if that may have an impact on the DOS CD-ROM driver. I also moved the SCSI ID of the CD drive from 3 to 6. I’ll look at the driver documentation to see if the ID can be specified while loading the driver.

I have a SCSI2SD not that blue one and it's working fine. Keep in mind that you can setup perhaps 4 drives on an 8GB SD card.
That means that SCSI-ID 0,1,2,3 are already used with the SCSI2SD adaper. One more for the SCSI-CDROM and perhaps an external SCSI:ZIPDRIVE.

CD's must be mounted while running in Dosmode to be recognized by the 486 card, but I think you know that already.

I have 4 drives configured on my BlueSCSI (0-3) and the CD-ROM is on ID 6 from memory. I reconfigured the drive from ID 3 to 6 to clear out the BlueSCSI. It works fine on Mac, but not seen in DOS, or at least not readable.

When you say mounted, do you mean inserted in the CD drive, or DOS or Mac action needs to be done??

min any case, like mentioned above, the CD drive works fine on the Mac side and can read the mounted CD in it. But the DOS side don’t see anything readable. It generates IO error.

Show me you config.sys and autoexec.bat.
The CD must be inserted in Dosmode to be accessible. Nothing more to do.
