How to make internal drive external?
Posted by: mloret on 2022-03-17 09:23:17
I would like to work on the internal 800k drive on my Macintosh plus without having to disassemble and reassemble the computer every time I make a change. I am wondering how I would make it so that I can use the drive externally using the external floppy port in the back rather than the internal connector?

I'm assuming there is a cable out there that converts the internal standard to the external floppy connector?

I was thinking of the FloppyEMU cable but it says "This adapter is only for use with a Floppy Emu disk emulator, and should not be used with original Apple floppy drives or other disk types."

I'd probably be personally inclined just to run a long ribbon cable out through the battery opening or something at the back,

Don’t see the point, found yourself an external drive, they are plenty around and keep the internal unmolested.
you can boot from the external drive anyway.

Testing the internal drive without having to disassemble whole computer to get to it.

Interesting idea...

I remember on my old Mac 128k, I was able to turn the internal floppy into an external by using an external floppy drive cable (from an external unit) that had an extra ground wire that connected to a terminal on the disk drive. Wondering if there is such a thing I could do with this 800k internal drive. I don't have the right cable and it doesn't seem to have a terminal. When I just connect it to a floppy ribbon it doesn't get power.

I made the attached PDF for building an external floppy cable. Hope it will help you. Should work with an 800k drive.
