Quicktime just downloaded and installed an update... on my SE/30

Seriously, color me COMPLETELY shocked.
I was using the Zip Drive on my SE/30 to rescue all of the data that have been trapped on some zip disks I have since the late 90s and in the process I came across my old MIDI and MOD/S3M music collection.

I haven't yet succeeded in finding a good MOD player for Mac (SoundPlayer68k crashes every time I run it and MODPlayer needs a 16 color screen...).
But I just had the most delightful experience trying to play a MIDI file.

First, I threw it into quicktime player to see if it'd play and...no it wouldn't. Maybe if I went and set the file creator type properly?
But some searches led me to Arnold's MIDI Player. Grabbed it from the garden, threw it on my AFP share and fired it up.

Sadly... when launching it, it informed me there was a missing quicktime component (Quicktime Music Note Allocator?!? Who names these things?). Humorously it informed me that if I have a dialup internet connection, it could go grab it from the Apple website for me. Well I have an ethernet connection through my RaSCSI so let's laugh at how this poor thing thinks it still has software support available.

And then this happened:

Seriously. My Mac SE/30 just downloaded and installed a software update from the internet in 2022 with just me clicking OK and away it went.
DID NOT SEE THAT COMING!

Ok that's something else.

I'm impressed enough that one can still install 10.4 and get the updates over the internet 😆

Well, I guess your SE/30 got the last laugh on that one. I'm not sure if I'd send the photo to Tim Cook, though. He might decide to shut down support of unsupported systems. Then again, he might think it's cool.

Anyway, good deal on being able to get the necessary component off the 'net with a 1989 vintage Mac.

Well... *if* he did, perhaps we could ask to have floppy, HFS, etc. support re-unstated... 🤔

Seriously, very cool that worked! Now you just need to hunt down / dust off some old MIDI gear and play your tunes properly! 😀

I've been messing a lot with my SE and Midi modules.

I haven't had much luck just playing MIDI files but I may just need an older version of quicktime. 2.5 wouldn't install. Would something like quicktime 2.0 install on an SE and play standard MIDI files?

However on the plus side, I do have the Sierra MT-32 driver working for Thexder, and I just found a sound editor for the Korg 05/RW which runs but gets serial communications errors. After a lot of reading, it seems it needs a straight thru DIN 8, not a crossed over one like the MacMan interfaces. I have one of those straight thru cables coming to test, as the 05/RW would be a very usable synth with this app.

I don't believe any version of Quicktime works with the 68000 - I think you need a '020 or faster

Neglected to mention, I have a 16mhz 030 and 68882, so basically a stock SE/30 w/4MB RAM is what I'm working with here.

Oh gotcha, sorry! I thought you meant you had a base SE haha

Hey no worries, any and all info is helpful.

Update on the Korg 05/RW just in case anyone finds this in the future, a straight thru midi cable yields nothing. A crossover one like for a printer/macman is working somewhat; I can send notes / note off messages, but I think the SE might just be struggling a bit on RAM or comm speed when it comes to loading entire patches. All the more reason to dust off a powermac I suppose.

Edit: If I send limited parts of info I'm able to update the synth settings though, which is just something else.

Double edit: seems to have straightened itself out, just using patchbay and the Korg X5 SED-01M Editor. This is awesome!

Sorry for the thread derail OP!
