performa 6300 vs 6360 issue
Posted by: Livingroom on 2022-03-14 18:22:46
someone told me, i can't remember where, to put my 6360 board into my 6300 case because the 6360 was destroyed by the USPS. the 6300 board boots in the 6360 case, but the 6360 board won't post in the 6300 case. what do you reckon is wrong?

It's down to the older 6300 power supply not providing +3.3V voltage regulation that the 6360 needs to function. The two motherboards are based on completely different architectures. You might need to Frankenstein's monster the casings to include the good 6300 plastics, chassis and 6360 PSU.

rats. it's not as simple as a PSU swap is it?

I can’t be 100% sure, but these systems are very modular so a PSU swap should be completely doable

Guess I wasn't 100% aware of the differences. Anyway, looks like you'll be doing something similar to a Takky mod on the 6300 case, except that it's already a PowerPC machine.

Here's the link to @jessenator's thread, which should provide some insight. https://68kmla.org/bb/index.php?threads/clarifications-for-a-not-takky-mod.40104/

Sounds like the harness from the 6360 chassis may need to get swapped to the 6300, along with the power supply and the board.

Wasn't the Performa 6300 only sold outside the US or am I remembering wrong?

Definitely sold within the US. I had one brand new.

so, i just took the plastic bits off the 6300 case and put them on the 6360 case and now we're cooking. fortunately the metal itself only has one bent flange so otherwise it's in good shape.

the only thing i need to do now is figure out how to swap the sticker identifying it as a 6300/6360 without tearing it!

You might want to use a very thin spudger or razor blade to carefully separate the label from the adhesive.

if your still working on this, i own a 6300 and have a 6360 coming in the mail. i can take photos and look it all over for you. i was gonna rebuild the 6300PSU anyway so ill have it all apart.
