(PPC) Routing software
Posted by: robin-fo on 2022-02-04 12:41:19
Hi everyone

I’d like to use my "new" Apple Workgroup Server as a router. I know of the "Apple Internet Router" package, but I wasn't able to find a version of it that is compatible with MacOS 8.6. It might be possible to get it running, but I wonder if there is an Apple or third party software that is better suited for the job.

Many thanks,
Robin

What protocols are you trying to route?

AppleTalk (and IP if possible)

IPNetrouter is one product that springs to mind. There is another whose name escapes me presently….

Thanks! Sadly, it appears to be only for IP routing...

SharewayIP is the other title, but I’m not sure it will do everything you want either.

Apple IP Gateway can be combined with Apple Internet Router for a more integrated AppleTalk-TCP/IP routing package, but it is 68k native and very possibly pre-Open Transport (I forget the details).

and very possibly pre-Open Transport
You are correct. MacTCP only for Apple Internet Router & Apple IP Gateway.

Another option is

Thanks guys, however I still haven't found what I was looking for: An AppleTalk routing software compatible with OpenTransport...

There is (was) Macintosh UAR: https://web.archive.org/web/20051227185018/http://www.cs.mu.oz.au/appletalk/doc/MacUAR.userDoc.html

Runs fine on my B&W G3 under 8.6

The ftp server is still operational, so for now you can download it from there if you want to try it out. As far as a license goes, that's another story. I doubt they will take a $50 check and send you a license key now. You'd have to find someone with a cracked PPC version and PM them.
