USB card in Mac OS 9.1
Posted by: Sinclair on 2016-04-14 03:25:13
Hello guys!

I recently bought this card usb for my Performa 6400.

http://www.ebay.es/itm/NewLink-USB-2-0-Hi-Speed-Host-PCI-4-1-port-card-/190515197975?hash=item2c5b973817:g:sx4AAOSwmrlUuiY6

In Mac OS 9.1 no detected  it and also cancels the network card that plugged in the other PCI bus.

Do I need some kind of controller?

In the ad claimed that compatilble with Mac OS 8.6 but the provider does not give me any support 🙁

Thank you

Honestly I'd say your best bet is to throw that in the trash and try to find an OHCI USB 1.1 card based on the NEC chipset Apple used for their early USB implementations. I have had *nothing* but trouble trying generic USB cards in a B&W G3, and one of them caused a similar symptom of interfering with other PCI devices. (And this included at least one card that came in a box claiming it worked with Macs.) The PCI bus implementation on older Apple machines frankly seems to be... iffy. I've never seen issues on other computers like I have on older Macs. (And not just the one B&W.)

Remember, even if it does "work" a USB 2.0 card will only work at 1.1 speeds under classic Mac OS anyway.

Oddly enough I've never gotten a 4 port USB 2.0 card to work in a Mac, even if stated as OHCI compatible - might be a higher power draw, pretty much everything else that's 3-port NEC has worked though.

I think I have a 5-port (!) USB card working in my MDD if I remember correctly. It seems to work just fine.

fire wire cards i have use pig tails to add full power to the ports from a molex connector.

The truth is that my Mac detects the USB card as you can see in the second picture.

In the first image I had not yet installed the USB card.

I think it is a problem of drivers / extensions.

Here is discussed a "USB Adapter Card Support 1.4.1". Where could I get this file?

Thanks again.

Now, whith those extensions the net card It is recognized and works.

However, when I insert a flash drive the computer seems not aware.

Should I do something special to explore a pendrive?

disk utility.  mac os 9 does not see the drive format.  I use ms dos format so its still cross platform, just in case.

Where is this item? I only see First Aids and Diskcopy .(

Perhaps you mean what in my system is called  "Configuración de unidades"  (configuration units).
That only appears hard drives and the CD-ROM, pero nada de USB.

if you put in a pc format using ms dos format.  in os 9 i think you need disk tools is the name.

If I insert a flash drive formatted in FAT file system, Mac should see when recording a file as a drive more.

I think I need specific drivers for my card.

The main chip of the PCI USB card is a NEC D0720101F1, as can see in the pic:

How you behave a Mac OS 9.x after inserting a flash drive?
Do I need to install any third party software (drivers, extension, utilitity ...) to access the files?

if its in hfs or ms dos format should work as any other flash drive.  if its a usb 2.0 card it may see it but card may not function.  As stated before not all cards are created equal.  could try a usb keyboard or mouse.  if they work you should be all set.

😵

Have mac os 9 native controlaores for USB keyboards and mouses?

Posted by: Macdrone on 2016-04-18 11:32:50
any keyboard or mouse should just work with the apple drivers installed.

Are you sure ?, we are talking about Mac OS 9

In any case I've tried with a USB mouse with the same result as the pendrive.
