Macintosh LC in LC II case?
Posted by: Aektann on 2022-01-02 13:50:30
I’ve got Macintosh LC few weeks ago. The machine itself is in the relatively good condition. I’m going to make a full recap, cause original capacitors are leaky.
It is interesting to notice two insertion pin sockets for fan and speaker instead of the typical surface contact-based assembly for this model. Looks much like LC II board, yet it has a second floppy connector and m68020 CPU.
The second strange thing I found, there’s no hole for a second floppy drive. The front panel looks exactly like for LC II.
I didn’t find any list of sub-revisions for the original LC. Is it the latest unified assembly with some enhancements from the LC II line?

That's interesting, I guess you are right it's quite a late motherboard revision as it's copyrighted 1990-1992 and the LC was discontinued in 1992.
Since the dual floppy configuration was not very popular, Apple certainly did some cost-saving changes while preparing the LC II.

Should have a look, but late front panel had a closing plastic piece for second floppy drive when not supplied.

Mine is made from one piece like the front bezel of LC II. No second floppy option, no way to get it through the case panel.

Yes, this is the canonical LC front panel like I saw in Wiki or EveryMac.com. Thank you.

I have seen an example of this on eBay before. So it’s not completely unique, but in all of my research over the years it is a real (albeit rare) variety. The LC3 also had two varieties (manual inject and auto inject, with cases to match) and I’ve even seen LC475 inside the LC2/3 style case. And I’ve also seen Performa 47x models with just “Macintosh” printed on the case and a sticker on the leg/stand identifying it as what Performa model it is.

I’m thinking when models were in transition, variations of case parts existed to use them all up.

Sure, it's not uncommon to see LCs without the second hole.
Here you can see both revisions of the LC case.

Had one of those Performa 475s. In my machine's case, it was actually silkscreened on the lower leg. That one wound up being a kludge. Took my LC's case lid and floppy drive and swapped it into the 475. LC went to someone along with some other stuff in trade for a //e as a manual inject "fish lips" LC that said "Macintosh" on the front.
