AIX on Apple Network Server

I thought I would start a new thread. Is there anyone that is proficient with AIX on the board? I am trying to back up the primary hdisk0 drive on the ANS 500 to the external SCSI port. I am at the point where it see's the external as a physical volume and it has it assigned it hdisk1. So it is there and see's it. I had installed a fresh version of AIX 4.1.4 on the external drive. What I want to do is backup and copy the entire hdisk0 primary drive to hdisk1... I've tried various ways to do this and cannot figure it out. I am familiar with Unix commands but I have never done this or worked with AIX. I was originally just trying to back it up to tape before I start messing with it but the DAT drive, well let's just say that's not happening.. So I have booted with the AIX cd and tried that way but I don't know the commands.. and I have tried SMIT while booted with the hdisk0 and it is seen as a physical disk and logical disk... I just can't perform this task.. So if anyone out there has a clue on how to do this that would be awesome! Most grateful for any helpers...

True today. Back in the day, tape backup, if you could find usable, reliable software, was de' bomb.

And Retrospect for the Mac was great software. Doesn't help on the ANS though.

Hard drives weren't find-them-in-ditches-for-free back then. 😎

Trag yoru so correct! But even back then I hated tape drives.... it was such a painful task!!! That sometimes took HOURS!!! It was good for the moment of time but beyond that now it no longer serves a purpose. I just could not believe how much those tape drives went for back then... ridiculous prices!!! Insane!!! I guess they had their day... I have to say it has been a life saver for me on my old Xenix box... after having the capstan rebuilt I was able to have a DC600A read and a certain large file I needed extracted successfully... I couldn't get it off floppy.. it would always crap out on disk #3.... But they served their purpose...

Now I just need to locate a copy of AIX 4.1.5 update.... hmmmm.... I guess 4.1.4 has a lot of bugs and 4.1.5 fixes a lot.. I just cannot locate it. I do have an original 4.1.4 install cd... thanks to anyone in advance!

Do share if you find it. I've never been motivated enough to go searching for it, though I really should.

ScutBoy do you think these are the right cd image files??

No - I don't think so. According to the FAQ at FloodGap, you should not apply the IBM patches for AIX but only the Apple version of the update.

See here if you haven't found it already - the AIX on ANS FAQ: https://www.floodgap.com/retrobits/ans/aix.html

"Remember, you can only install Apple-branded AIX 4.1.5. IBM-branded 4.1.5 won't work, and may ruin your installation! The update was distributed as both a non-bootable upgrade CD and a bootable full system install; the latter is strongly preferred."

I've never found either the full installer or the upgrade CD. It's not been a priority since my machine doesn't need the consistent uptime that seems to be the main bug that was fixed in 4.1.5.

if @aplmak or anyone else has more/better info, I'm all ears.

Did you ever find Apple AIX 4.1.5? I have been looking for it myself.
