PowerBook G4 Restoration 500Mhz
Posted by: jamesmd on 2016-03-30 02:43:00
Hello,

I recently bought a PowerBook G4 Titanium. The machine is in bad shape although I am going to restore it to its former glory and add it to my collection.

Here are the photos the seller took before I bought it:

As you can see it is in pretty bad shape, thankfully the lid and screen are good, as is the keyboard. I already had a spare battery, Charger and base.

On arrival its actually worse than it looked, it seems that a seized hinge has been the cause of the cracks. I have oiled the hinge and there is now much less stress on the casing. The Powerbook seemed totally dead but this was just caused by a dead PRAM battery!

It Lives!!

Here you can see the extent of the cracking:

I didn't waste any time and went straight to ebay in search of a new top casing. I planned to epoxy the original and repaint it but I don't think I would get the strength back.

I got this for £6, it is much better than the original but it does still have a small crack. This should be an easy fix!

Thats the progress so far, I hope to have this finished in the next week or so! The only parts I still need to find are a CD/DVD Drive, the Optical drive ribbon cable, an airport card and 2x 512MB PC100 SDRAM Sticks.

I'll update this thread as I have progress.
