Desktop Picture program for 512k Mac?

Anyone know of an app that'll let you put a 1-bit picture as a desktop picture on a 512k Mac?

there was one called "Backsplash", but can't find it now...

Here :

BackSplash_II-1.sit

Works on a Classic with system 6.0.8, so maybe on a 512k...

It really depends on the system you're using... IIRC, the 512k can go as high as 4.1 and BackSplash II works for 6 and above.

So I don't think this version will work on your system. It has an extension, so it's good for System 6 all right, but I don't think 4.1 can handle extensions...

I think BackSplash 1 might work with the 512k, but it's nowhere to be found...

Nuts.  That'd be a great program, if someone could write a minimal System file that lets you put a 512x384 1-bit GIF as a desktop picture.  I bet it wouldn't take more than a few KBs of memory.

Never tried it...

Doubtful, it was released in 1996.  That's about 10 years too late.  Would need to run on System 3 or 4.

yeah ... though the same after seeing the date...

How about "Backdrop" ? Says it would run on a 512k...

An uncompressed 1 bit picture the size of the Mac's screen is about 22k. So even if the "extension" (an INIT?) was minuscule it'll cost you about that much memory. Not a huge deal if you're using a Fat Mac mostly to run stuff that also works on a 128k but perhaps a bit chubby for comfort otherwise.

Were extensions even a thing on System 3 / 4 ? I dunno never used early systems yet. The 128k is being repaired right now. I'll get a taste of Finder 1.1g in a moment

No, Gorgonops is right.  They had INITs back then.  I think Extensions were a System 7+ thing.

Yes, my understanding is that INITs and Extensions are one in the same, and Apple came up with the more user-friendly term "extensions" for System 7.

Likewise, Control Panels were known pre-System 7 as CDEVs.
