thermal paste for a g4 graphite?
Posted by: jeffmr4 on 2021-02-17 18:31:38
Hello,

I am replacing the logic board and cpus in my dual 500 gigabit g4 and am wondering if I need to use thermal paste for the cpus.  From the heatsink I took off of my board I just see a rectangular piece of black tape/plastic (very thin, ?) on the heatsink and a small piece of plastic over the cpu.  But, I don't see any previous paste.  Does anyone know if it requires it?

Thanks.

Apple did use that thermal tape stuff on some G4 processors; I found it, e.g., in my 12” G4 PowerBook 1.5 when I took it apart. I am pretty sure, though, that my G4 towers have had heatsink grease on there, and personally I would use it in preference to the tape.

@jeffmr4 I always use thermal paste on G4s - they always benefit from it! Any non-conductive paste will do the job.
