Key command to eject a DVD or CD?
Posted by: mraroid on 2016-03-23 04:00:57
Folks...

I am having a devil of a time with a G4 powerbook I bought on ebay.  My drive took my Apple OS DVD just fine, read it just fine, and ejected it just fine.

I have a new stack of Sony CD-R (700MB) branded CDs.  I inserted one and it never appeared on the desktop.  After re booting several times, it finally spit out the blank CD.  Just in case that one was defective, I tried another one.  Same issue.  Only this time, the powerbook will not see it, or spit it out.  I have shut down the Mac, rebooted, but nothing will eject the CD. I can hear the CD (or the drive) spin up when I boot or re boot.

Do I have access to any keyboard commands to eject a DVD or a CD?  How about a reboot key command?

My powerbook is missing the small hole I see in older macs that let me stick a paperclip in it, and manually eject a DVD or a CD.

Other this disassemble the powerbook, any suggestions on how I can eject the disk?

Thanks in advance.

Reboot the PowerBook while keeping the mouse button pressed.

Galgot's method should work, but if not, if this model still has Open Firmware (boot holding CMD+OPT+O+F) at the prompt type

eject

and it should eject the disk.

This model does have Open Firmware (all PPC Macs have it), so typing those commands is definitely a thing.

Also, you're aware of the eject key up near the top right of the keyboard? I believe that it would only work if the OS sees something in the drive, though (unless it's a desktop, in which case, this button will open and close the tray).

Above the DELETE button (upper right) is the CD Eject button. Hold it down when you turn it on or when the desktop finishes loading.

Thanks everyone for the many suggestions.

Last night I tried holding down the mouse pad and booting.  That did not help.  I was going to try ScutBoy's suggestion next.  But I thought I would go to Disk Utility and see if I could find any help.  Disk Utility was able to see the CD.  On the second tab, the erase tab, I found a eject button.  That ejected the CD.

Elfen - guess I need to find a users guide for the powerbook - a eject key on the keyboard??!! Why did I not think of that?  Dua!

After all of the above, I installed my Leopard DVD and booted to it.  When I ran disk repair, it found several issues with my hard drive and repaired it.  I can run permission repair and disk repair now and both come out clean.  I suspect the bad disk was causing a lot of my problems.

Thanks every one for all the help.
